Responsibilities

  • Advise and counsel members with regards to academic and future employment options, benefits, and programs provided by the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds; analyze and interpret student transcripts and academic records
  • Refer members to appropriate academic programs including degree, certificate, continuing education, and preparatory classes; provide assistance over the phone, in-person, online, at healthcare facilities, and other events to ensure members make sound academic/career decisions and receive benefits, as per Fund guidelines
  • Lead projects related to identifying, counseling, and recruiting members for cohort programs, provide on-going case management, develop new support programs, conduct research, and create career counseling and other case management materials
  • Develop and conduct Academic and Career Guidance Workshops; identify needs and develop proposed solutions for customized workshops and interventions
  • Collect and analyze academic and tuition assistance data; consult with Team Lead for quality control of tuition assistance applications prior to final approval and processing; submit workshop data to administrative staff for members’ reporting and tracking purposes
  • Responsible for preparing member appeal documentation; ensure members receive timely communication, close case management, and written notification regarding final decisions of appeals
  • Establish relationships and coordinate services with contracted counselors, educational institutions and external workshop facilitators; ensure stakeholders have knowledge and the tools necessary to provide the highest level of service and that referrals among departments and schools are seamless
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by management


Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, or Human/Social Services required
  • Minimum three (3) years direct counseling experience in adult education, vocational/college programs, job placement or career counseling required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Bilingual Mandarin and Cantonese preferred
  • Knowledge of health care education programs/career ladders or City University of New York (CUNY) system preferred
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends; must be able to at work various locations
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with staff and stakeholders, excellent customer service skills a must
  • Detail oriented and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines, and work well under pressure
  • Excellent reading, writing and verbal communication skills including presentation/facilitation skills
