World Explorers is hiring Afterschool Counselors at multiple Brooklyn school sites for the 2025–2026 school year! We’re looking for energetic, responsible, and team-oriented individuals who are excited to support youth development through fun, structured, and meaningful programming. Join our mission to create safe and enriching afterschool spaces where kids grow, explore, and thrive!

About World Explorers:
World Explorers is a Brooklyn-based organization dedicated to delivering high-quality enrichment and care for children in grades Pre-K through 5. Through our afterschool and school break programs, we support children's curiosity, creativity, and confidence by offering fun and structured programming within safe and supportive environments. We are proud to partner with public and charter schools across the borough.

Position Overview:
We are hiring part-time Afterschool Counselors to lead daily activities, supervise students, and maintain a positive and safe environment at one of our Brooklyn locations. This is an ideal role for aspiring educators, youth workers, and anyone passionate about supporting children in an engaging setting.

Schedule:

  • Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM–6:00 PM (times may vary slightly by school site)
  • Follows the NYC DOE calendar (September–June)
  • Additional hours available during school breaks and holidays when children are out of school
  • During these full-day camps, staff work 8:00 AM–4:00 PM or 9:00 AM–5:00 PM shifts
  • Days include field trips, in-house enrichment activities, and visits from special guests
  • Occasional staff meetings or trainings outside of regular hours

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and lead a group of students (Pre-K through 5th grade) in afterschool programming
  • Facilitate enrichment activities (e.g., arts, games, STEM, team-building, etc.)
  • Escort students safely within the school building and during dismissal
  • Support daily attendance and dismissal procedures, including parent/guardian checkouts
  • Reinforce clear behavior expectations and program routines
  • Collaborate with site supervisors and peers to ensure smooth daily operations
  • Maintain communication with families and school staff in a respectful and professional manner
  • Follow safety protocols and respond appropriately to incidents

Qualifications:
Required:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Experience working with children in a group setting (camp, school, youth program, etc.)
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to the full school year
  • Must pass required background check

Preferred:

  • CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain training provided)
  • Interest in education, child development, or related fields
  • Familiarity with DOE school environments or Brooklyn communities

Compensation:
$16–$20/hour, depending on experience

Why Work With Us?

  • Make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families
  • Join a supportive and mission-driven team
  • Receive training, feedback, and opportunities for advancement
  • Be part of a positive, fun, and purpose-filled afterschool environment

FAQs for Applicants

Q: Is this position only for the school year?
Primarily yes, but staff also have the opportunity to work additional full-day hours during school breaks (e.g., winter break, spring break, and holidays).

Q: What do school break camps involve?
During school breaks, World Explorers hosts full-day camps featuring off-site trips, on-site themed activities, and special guests. Counselors are expected to assist with supervision, transitions, and activity facilitation just like during afterschool—but for a full-day shift.
