Skiatook Public Schools is seeking applicants for a High School Counselor/Alternative Education & Virtual Academy Coordinator for the 2025-2026 school year.

JOB TITLE: Counselor

DEPARTMENT: High School

REPORTS TO: Principal

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

CONTRACT STATUS: Full-time / 177-days / Extra Duty 30 days

SALARY SCHEDULE: Certified / Extra Duty Counselor Stipend

SUMMARY: Help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

  1. Assist students in course and subject selection.
  2. Obtain and disseminate occupational/post-secondary education information to students.
  3. Provide updated information to parents and confer with parents whenever necessary.
  4. Participate in Parent/Teacher Conferences.
  5. Work to discover and develop special abilities of students and to resolve student's educational handicaps.
  6. Register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
  7. Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  8. Help students evaluate career interests and choices.
  9. Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity.
  10. Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
  11. Guide students in their participation in school and community activities.
  12. Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
  13. Supervise the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
  14. Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  15. Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on student records.
  16. Assist in the orientation of new faculty members.
  17. Provide in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
  18. Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling department.
  19. Take an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
  20. Interpret the guidance program to the community.
  21. Arrange for summer school work.
  22. Collaborate with school nurse and administration regarding program development.
  23. Coordinate and facilitate PSAT/NMSQT, ACT, correspondence, and state mandated tests, as needed.
  24. Perform credit checks for all students.
  25. Coordinate application process with area Career Tech Center.
  26. Assists with special projects.
  27. All other duties as assigned by the administrator.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field
  2. Master's Degree in Counseling or related field
  3. Valid Oklahoma School Counselor Certificate


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player. Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

COORDINATOR-SKIATOOK HS ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION & VIRTUAL ACADEMY

DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: High School Principal
SUMMARY OF POSITION:

To coordinate and manage an alternative education and virtual academy program, utilizing managerial, instructional, and interpersonal skills that will lead to meeting the educational needs of students enrolled in the Skiatook Public Schools Alternative Education Program and Virtual Academy. This position is responsible for formulating and interpreting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
DUTIES:

As assessed by the supervisor, successful fulfillment of job performance will include completion of the following duties and responsibilities:

Instructional Roles-
  • Implements and establishes a variety of innovative, effective, and new teaching approaches as standard methods of curriculum delivery in all classes taught
  • Models effective instructional, classroom management, and intervention strategies for academically and behaviorally at-risk students
  • Collaborates effectively with colleagues on professional learning community team(s) and instructional data team(s) to improve instruction
  • Works with other teachers to identify curriculum, coursework, and assessments that help students gain mastery of content
  • Employs and shares effective instructional strategies that help to improve student achievement throughout the alternative education program and virtual academy
  • Works to achieve collective school and district goals and objectives
  • Collaborates where appropriate with College/University and Career/Industry professionals in order to prepare students for college and career
  • Keeps informed of and trained in educational innovations and implements current technology into classroom instruction
  • Develops course content and aligns it with current Oklahoma adopted content state standards
  • Works with special educators and parents in implementing IEP's and 504 plans for students to appropriately modify instruction, services, and expectations for students with these plans
  • Helps maintain positive classroom and school-wide climates
  • Pursues professional development opportunities to improve instructional practices and student achievement
  • Coordinates, sets, and monitors the goal setting, individual student progress, and successful completion of courses for all students in the alternative education programs
  • Tracks attendance and prepares appropriate paperwork to appropriately account for student attendance in all alternative education programs

Program Responsibilities-
  • Works with counselors to recommend the placement and assignment of students to the subjects, levels, and classes in the program
  • Works individually and with program colleagues and school administration to develop and implement effective academic and behavioral interventions throughout the programs
  • Supervises and oversees the appropriate use of school equipment, instructional materials and technology
  • Assists in the completion of program reports, documentation, and surveys
  • Coordinates student participation in program-related contests, societies, and conferences
  • Assists in the selection of instructional materials, technology, and equipment needed to enhance instruction
  • Participates in program and school wide decision-making activities
  • Becomes a direct link between content specific teachers, students, and parents to understand expectations for academic work
  • Develops processes, procedures, and paperwork/electronic forms that assist in the effective operation of the alternative education program and virtual academy
  • Meets with parents and students when they enter the alternative education programs to orient, communicate expectations, and identify appropriate placement within the alternative education programs
  • Trains other teachers in the methodology, software, and hardware used in the alternative education programs

Student/Teacher/Parent Relations Role-
  • Maintains open dialogue with the parent community through the use of multiple forms of communication (parent conferences, website, online grade book, prompt return of parent phone/email messages, consistent communication with general education teachers, etc.)
  • Is available to students and intervenes with students as needed
  • Utilizes a variety of techniques to build relationships with students
  • Participates in advisory capacities in student clubs/organizations/class advisor roles
  • Takes the lead in organizing and running intervention meetings for students who are struggling in the alternative education program
  • Serves as the supervising classroom teacher on a daily basis
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Valid Oklahoma Teaching Credential
  • Three years of successful classroom experience preferred
  • Instructional Technology training and/or experience preferred
