About Middleburg Humane Foundation:

Middleburg Humane Foundation (MHF) operates a private, non-profit, 23-acre farm shelter located in Marshall, Virginia. Our mission is to provide a safe haven for abused, neglected, and at-risk animals, both large and small. We specialize in the rehabilitation of animals in distress and place them into loving permanent homes.

Position Overview:

MHF is seeking a dedicated and experienced Animal Care Manager to lead a team of 7 animal care staff. This key leadership role is responsible for ensuring that daily care protocols are consistently followed and that the health, welfare, and enrichment of all animals under our care are maintained to the highest standard.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership
  • Recruit, train, and supervise animal care staff
  • Create and manage weekly staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage
  • Provide ongoing coaching and performance evaluations
  • Animal Care Oversight
  • Ensure consistent implementation of daily care protocols for all animals
  • Collaborate with veterinary staff regarding animal health needs
  • Oversee the intake of all new animals, including:
  • Performing brief physical exams
  • Performing infectious disease testing (e.g., heartworm, FeLV/FIV)
  • Administering standard vaccinations and antiparasitic treatments
  • Support relinquishment and return processes
  • Public & Community Engagement
  • Communicate with members of the public regarding animal relinquishments, post-adoption concerns, and general inquiries
  • Represent the organization during community outreach efforts (e.g., vaccine clinics)
  • Administrative Duties
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to animal care and staffing
  • Coordinate with the Medical Director to assess staffing and care needs

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in animal welfare, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods
  • Must be self-motivated, dependable, and capable of managing a team independently
  • Comfortable working with the public in emotionally sensitive situations
  • Fear Free Certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire
  • Must be certified in euthanasia through VDACS (Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services) or willing to obtain certification upon hire

Schedule & Compensation:

  • 40 hours per week, generally scheduled as 4 x 10-hour days
  • At least one weekend day required
  • Flexible scheduling based on operational needs
