Job Summary
The Lead psychiatrist completes comprehensive mental health services, addressing a wide range of psychiatric conditions for incarcerated individuals at Oakland County Jail (OCJ). This includes conducting evaluations, prescribing and monitoring medications, consultations, providing psychiatric leadership to the comprehensive mental health services team and collaborating with the healthcare team within a carceral setting. This position is intended to provide remote and in-person care in Pontiac, MI (hybrid schedule).
Essential Functions
- Provides virtual and in-person psychiatric evaluations, treatment, and ongoing monitoring for incarcerated individuals, including those on behavior or suicide watch, and individuals in restricted housing or behavioral units.
- Diagnoses and treats psychiatric conditions, prescribing appropriate psychotropic medications, and adjusting treatment plans as necessary.
- Evaluates individuals in crisis and refer them to appropriate psychiatric facilities or crisis centers as necessary.
- Collaborates with all professionals within the unit, including Nurses, Physicians, Jail Caseworkers, and Support Staff to further the inmates' treatment plan.
- Provides expanded psychiatric coverage, including on-call support during evenings and weekends on a rotating basis.
- Works with the on-site pharmacy to order psychotropic medications in accordance with the jail’s formulary.
- Writes discharge prescriptions for individuals transitioning out of psychiatric care.
- Supervises all other behavioral health professionals, including Psychiatry Residents/Fellows and Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs)
- Maintains accurate, complete, and timely psychiatric entries within the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
- Comply with all HIPAA privacy and security requirements.
- Assist in facilitating referrals to crisis centers or psychiatric facilities (e.g., provide necessary supporting documentation), if deemed medically necessary.
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine, specialty in Psychiatry.
- Completion of accredited residency program in Psychiatry.
- Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Board of Medicine Physician License.
- State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Board or Pharmacy Controlled Substance License.
- Board Certified in Psychiatry.
- Board Certified in Forensic Psychiatry preferrable.
- Obtain Controlled Substance Registration Certificate, United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Washington, DC, 20537.
- Attest to no complaints or penalties from the Board of Medicine.
- No history of criminal misdemeanor or felony.
- At least five (5) years of experience in the practice of psychiatry, including medical-clinical treatment.
- Completion of at least two years in a forensic-focused residency program may be substituted for professional experience.
- Preferred: Forensic Psychiatric and / or experience within the carceral setting
- Preferred: experience within the carceral setting.

- Knowledge of the OCHN system, providers, eligibility criteria, and community referral resources.
- Knowledge of DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria.
- Knowledge of Michigan Mental Health Code.

Special Information (Travel required, physical requirements, on-call schedules, and so on):
- Must have available means of transportation to and from OCHN and for required offsite meetings or site visits.
- Must be available for meetings and events which may occur outside of standard office hours.
- Evening and weekend availability may be required for on-call psychiatric coverage.
- Scheduling is made on a mutually agreeable basis.
- Hybrid (onsite/remote) work schedule available. On-site work is completed at the Oakland County Jail, Pontiac, MI.
- Must pass an Oakland County Jail background check.
