Job Scope:

The primary goal of this position is to work in collaboration with the mobile crisis team clinical staff to provide mental health services including, brief crisis intervention, assessment, de-escalation, crisis planning, support focused on maintaining wellness and recovery. The mobile crisis team will respond to Hotline referrals 24 hours a day. Mobile crisis runs in Baltimore City are made as a team including a Mental Health Counselor and a Peer Support Specialist. Work is reviewed through employee supervision, evaluations, and client records.

To achieve this goal, the following duties are required:

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the mobile crisis team and respond to individuals in crisis in the community or hospital ED

  • Work with the individual in crisis to develop a crisis plan, provide linkages to care and introduce other crisis planning tools to the individual as needed, prior to the MCT completion of the crisis run

  • Work with all members of the team to facilitate engagement of the individual in crisis and helping them feel welcome and comfortable

  • Work with individuals in crisis to assist with continuity of care by giving them mental health, addiction, peer recovery supports and other needed resources. When needed for extra support refer individuals to BCRI’s Peer Support Intervention and Support services

  • Builds relationships with addiction, mental health and homeless outreach providers, peer recovery supports and other community resources

  • Performs timely and accurate documentation of all clinical and client-related information

  • Maintains professional open, effective, and appropriate communication with clients, BCRI staff, management, outside agencies and the public

  • Complete all required trainings by the scheduled due date and maintain compliance to all BCRI policies and procedures

  • Empower participants to become self-advocates for their own recovery/wellness

  • Maintains professional boundaries with clients, staff and other outside agencies

  • Works with all clients from a strengths-based perspective, providing support and encouragement as they move forward in their recovery

  • Other duties as required

Qualifications: Candidates must have a high school diploma but an associate degree is preferred. Peer Support Specialist Certification is required and must have a valid driver’s license. They must have a minimum of two years of experience working in the field of peer recovery. They must have experiential expertise living with addiction and/or mental illness. They must have knowledge of mental health and addiction resources in Baltimore City.

Physical Demands: Moderate walking, standing, climbing stairs, and sitting required. Light lifting may be recovery required. Transportation of clients and their belongings in agency vehicles. Minimal support and assistance with client care needs.

Working Conditions: Works as part of the Mobile Crisis Team, which provides services in the community. Visits clients in various community settings (homes, hospitals, businesses, and streets). When in the office, works generally in well-lighted and ventilated office environment.

Hazards: Potential exposure to highly charged, stressful and emotional situations; potential exposure to aggressive encounters.

Established in 1992, BCRI’s mission is to provide timely and effective community-based psychiatric crisis intervention and addictions treatment services in the least restrictive environment possible.

  • BCRI serves Baltimore as the city’s first and only comprehensive behavioral health crisis provider, offering 24/7 crisis hotline and mobile crisis teams, withdrawal management services, crisis residential alternatives, HIV/HCV testing and linkage to care, in-home support and critical incident response teams, along with community and police education services.

  • BCRI provides behavioral health crisis stabilization services to Baltimore City residents regardless of ability to pay, currently treating approximately 900 individuals between the ages of 18-65 in its crisis residential unit (CRU) and 500 individuals in its medical 3.7 detoxification (Detox) unit per year.

  • Most of the population served by BCRI lives below the Federal Poverty Line and qualifies for medical assistance or is uninsured and more than half of this population is homeless.

  • Approximately 75% of clients served have a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder.
