Job Overview
MOTER Technologies seeks a strategic, execution-focused leader to serve as our Director of Data Privacy, Security, and Compliance. In this role, the Director will design, implement, and oversee the privacy, data security, and regulatory compliance programs supporting our mission to leverage mobility and behavioral data for modern insurance solutions responsibly.
As an insurtech company operating at the intersection of personal data, automotive telematics, and regulated insurance products, we face unique challenges—and opportunities—related to consumer trust, data protection, and compliance. This role is critical to ensure that our infrastructure, data flows, and business practices meet or exceed the legal, ethical, and operational standards expected within the insurance industry. The Director of Data Privacy, Security and Compliance reports to the COO/CIO.
Essential Functions
- Develop and implement a comprehensive privacy, security, and compliance strategy aligned with applicable insurance, consumer, and data protection regulations (e.g., GLBA, GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, NYDFS, and NAIC model laws).
- Partner with IT and Engineering to implement technical safeguards protecting customer and partner data across all systems, including telematics pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and AI/ML environments.
- Lead internal data classification, access controls, and encryption policies for sensitive PII, vehicle data, and claims information.
- Ensure the organization is prepared for audits by insurance commissioners, data protection authorities, or enterprise clients.
- Drive privacy-by-design practices in product development, including conducting risk assessments and prompting data minimization.
- Oversee vendor risk assessments and conduct compliance due diligence for all third-party data processors and partners.
- Develop training programs to promote a culture of privacy and security awareness across technical and non-technical teams.
- Establish KPIs and provide regular reporting on compliance posture and risk status to executive leadership and the board.
- Serve as the point of contact for regulators, external auditors, and key B2B customers regarding privacy and security matters.
- Duties may evolve based on business needs, and additional tasks may be assigned.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in data privacy, information security, or regulatory compliance—ideally within insurtech, fintech, or healthtech.
- Deep familiarity with data protection regulations and standards include:
- U.S. laws: CCPA/CPRA, GLBA, NYDFS Cybersecurity Regulation
- Global laws: GDPR, ePrivacy, LGPD
- Privacy privacy frameworks: SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST CSF
- Insurance-specific frameworks: NAIC Data Security Model Law
- Proven experience collaborating with IT, product, and legal teams in fast-paced environments.
- Prior involvement in audits or regulatory reviews conducted by state Departments of Insurance or data protection authorities.
- Certifications strongly preferred: CIPP/US, CISSP, CISA, or CIPT.
- Strong project management and cross-functional leadership skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and take initiative
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
Office Location
- Torrance, CA - Hybrid (Tuesday and Thursday in office)
Compensation
- For California based hires, the annual salary range is $150,000 - $200,000 depending on experience.
- FLSA Job Status is Exempt
