Job Description
SUMMARY: Provides a comprehensive counseling program for students in grades K-5 and specifically provides services to meet the needs of assigned students; consults with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provides support to other school educational programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following:
1.Continues to develop and implement the elementary school counseling curriculum.
a. Conducts learning activities in classroom settings.
b. Consults with and/or is a resource person to teachers to facilitate the infusion of learning activities into the regular education curriculum.
c. Participates in developing the guidance curriculum as needed.
2. Guides groups and individual students through the development of educational, personal,
social, and career plans.
3. Counsels small groups and individual students.
a. Conducts structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions in systematic response to identified needs of individuals and small groups of students.
4. Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.
a. Participates in in-service programs for school personnel.
b. Participates in staff meetings.
c. Participates in conferences with teachers, students, and parents.
d. Conducts and provides opportunities for parent education programs.
e. Assists families with school-related issues.
f. Consults with administration and teaching staff.
5. Makes student referrals to appropriate community resources.
a. Consults and coordinates with district resources including, but not limited to, school nurses, administrators, social workers, and special education providers.
b. Consults and coordinates with community-based service agencies, physicians, counseling agencies, and psychologists.
6. Participates in, coordinates, or conducts guidance and counseling activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
a. Interprets group test results.
b. Establishes effective liaisons with the various instructional departments and community resources.
c. Works with other school staff in the appropriate placement of students.
d. Participates in the implementation of the district testing program.
e. Provides opportunities for seeking college financial aid.
7. Plans and evaluates the counseling program.
a. Annually reviews and modifies with other staff and administration the counseling program content based on student needs.
b. Establishes the counseling department calendar.
c. Evaluates the counseling learning activities as they are implemented.
d. Completes an annual counseling program evaluation.
8. Pursues continuous professional growth.
a. Attends state and local staff development offerings.
b. Joins professional counseling associations.
c. Reads professional journals.
d. Attends relevant workshops and conferences sponsored by professional organizations.
e. Maintains requirements for state licensure.
9. Maintains student records.
a. Creates, updates, and distributes student progress and grade reports.
b. Regularly updates student permanent record files.
c. Generates and distributes student schedules.
d. Protects confidentiality as required by FERPA
10. Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the principal and/or Superintendent.
