FUNCTION:
Under the authority of the Coordinator for School Social Workers and the School Social Worker Internship program, the Intern School Social Worker will participate in a full-time training experience, the purpose of which will be to further develop skills in the area of diagnostic assessment, individual, group, and family therapy, consultation and related follow-up social work services for the pre-school and school age child. The School Social Work Intern will also enhance technical skills, critical judgment, professional attitudes, responsibility, independence, communication skills, and the ability to relate to others.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Second year field placement in the MSW Graduate School of Social Work 2-Day (.4 FTE):
  • Hold a Master's Degree in social work from a graduate school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, working toward a PEL Endorsement, School Social Work 3-Day (.6 FTE):
  • Enrolled in a School Social Work program leading to a Master's Degree in social work and a Professional Educator License from a graduate school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Acquire working knowledge of the public school system's organization and operation.
  • Gain knowledge of the relationship of the special education programs in relation to the general education programs.
  • Become familiar with the role and function of the School Social Worker and his/her place in the organization of the school system/district.
  • Develop skills in conducting diagnostic interviews, providing consultative services to school personnel and parents.
  • Gain expertise in behavioral analysis and management programs.
  • Develop expertise in the completion and scoring of formal adaptive behavior scale assessment protocols, scoring, interpretation, presentation of interpretation of the protocol, and formulating recommendations and/or suggestions for their practical implementation.
  • Develop communicative and consultative skills with the ability to participate as a school district/building/special services team member.
  • Develop and implement effective therapeutic counseling skills.
  • Develop knowledge of the services available to children from community agencies and professionals.
  • Performs all other responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services or designee.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback.
  • Ability to compose correspondence, reports, and/or other required written materials.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, inquiries, and/or complaints.
  • Displays courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to perform basic math using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals consistent with the duties of this position.
REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and information furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to identify and define problem(s), collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to use ethical reasoning skills as it aligns with the NASW Code of Ethics.

  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality.

  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to perform duties in compliance with all district, Board, state and federal laws, methods, requirements, policies, procedures, and activities pertinent to the duties of this position.

  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
