Position Summary

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) at Summa Academy, NPS, provides effective, student-centered, and compassionate behavior consultation services for students who require more individualized or extensive needs. BCBAs support a minimum of 2 dedicated classroom teams in the implementation of skill acquisition and behavior support strategies that align with current best practices from the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). BCBAs provide guidance and training to classroom and IEP teams so that each student can safely access academic, social, and self-help opportunities to assist them transition back to a less restrictive environment (LRE).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assessment of Student Behavioral Needs including Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs):
  • Identify behaviors that interfere with students making meaningful progress towards their IEP and functional skill goals and identify skills that should be taught so that students can.
  • Present a comprehensive report about assessment results at the subsequent Individualized Educational Program (IEP) team meeting, as needed.
  • Make recommendations to the IEP team based on the findings of each assessment and specific to the identified disability as it relates to classroom performance and access to core curriculum.
  • Development of Behavior Interventions and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs):
  • Design, update, and oversee the development and implementation of plans/protocols, programs, policies, and best practices related to instruction and behavior intervention using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for students with Autism and other developmental disabilities
  • Develop Behavior IEP Goals:
  • Focusing on skill acquisition and functionally equivalent replacement behaviors
  • Oversee Behavior Intervention Plan and IEP Goal Implementation:
  • Consult with staff concerning appropriate learning strategies and positive behavior interventions to support students access instruction
  • Plan, provide, and oversee, positive behavior management interventions and programs for each student or classroom.
  • Coordinate and provide hands-on feedback to teachers, providers, RBTs, and support staff while they are working with students in the classroom setting using Behavior Skills Training including implementation of behavior interventions and programs.
  • Ensure staff are implementing evidence-based, student specific, and consistent behavior interventions/protocols and collecting data with fidelity
  • Assist with any crisis calls that occur throughout the school day:
  • On standby to provide supplemental support as needed while students are on campus
  • Monitor the Effectiveness of Behavior Interventions & Adjust Based on Student Progress:
  • Manage a caseload of students or classrooms to support Specialized Academic Instruction and behavior interventions.
  • Ensure all students on caseload are making progress on behaviors targeted for reduction and replacement behavior IEP goals.
  • Develop LRE and transition plans/goals:
  • Outline plans for students transitioning to a LRE (less restrictive environment) and towards less restrictive supports so that students continue to make meaningful progress towards their IEP academic and functional skill goals in less restrictive settings.
  • Report on Student Behavioral Progress:
  • Meet internal and external reporting deadlines
  • Develop and present progress summaries, comprehensive reports, and data on each student’s behavioral progress including assessment results during Individualized Educational Program (IEP) and team meetings.
  • Consultation with IEP Team Members:
  • Take the initiative to problem solve and create material and content based on IEP team feedback.
  • Collaborate with teacher, parents/caregivers, and related service providers (e.g., SLP, OT, AAC, APE, counseling, etc.) to assist students learn skills to access learning opportunities in all settings and with all staff while keeping themselves and others safe.
  • Manage Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and Behavior Technicians (BTs) providing paraprofessional support:
  • Manages a team of RBTs to ensure they have the skills, support, and supervision to provide the best quality ABA service to our students.
  • Provide Professional Development to all staff and revise PD content calendar based on observations, staff needs, and student behaviors
  • Assist RBTs Maintain Credentials as outlined by the BACB
  • Provide Supervision for staff accruing clinical hours for their BCBA credential as outlined by the BACB
  • Support Daily Operations of each school site including but not limited to:
  • Staffing adjustments
  • Corrective Action
  • Trial Days for potential incoming students
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Follow and uphold all Summa Academy policies and procedures as outlined in the handbook, policies and procedure documents and any additional communications with regards to policies and procedures
  • Provide a learning environment that allows for individual differences, student assent, and respect for the dignity and worth of each student
  • Provide and respond to feedback professionally and adjust performance accordingly
  • Maintain BCBA credential as outlined by the BACB

Desired Education and Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree in Special Education, Applied Behavior Analysis, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) for at least 2 years.
  • Certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board to provide supervision to those pursuing certification.
  • 2 years of related professional experience assessing, designing, and providing programs based on ABA to individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • 2 or more years in a supervisory role.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • The position typically operates on-site, in-person, in a school environment with business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 am – 4pm or 8:30-4:30 pm but available to attend meetings/trainings, conduct assessments, or IEPs if scheduled beyond those typical hours.
  • The employee may be required to intervene and de-escalate physical and emotional outbursts by students, including such behaviors as kicking, spitting, hitting, scratching, biting, running, property displacement and destruction, and cursing; the employee must be able to run quickly for brief spurts.
  • While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stand, move and walk at a brisk pace, sit, and use hands and arms to handle, feel and reach.
  • The position requires the ability to accompany students anywhere on school premises, including supporting with toileting and other basic needs
  • The employee is occasionally required to stoop or kneel and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Employee must be physically able to implement SafetyCare and ABA procedures, and to perform crisis intervention, training, and techniques.
