Overview

The Vermont Commission on Women (VCW) seeks an energetic, skilled, and resourceful professional who is dedicated to gender equity and social justice to join our tight-knit, highly collaborative team as the Assistant Director. This is a new position that will support the VCW mission and Executive Director primarily through providing advice and counsel to the executive and legislative branches and the public in the form of research, data, policy analysis, and public education.

Mission and Work of the Commission
VCW is an independent non-partisan state government commission working to advance rights and opportunities for women and girls. VCW provides advice and counsel to the legislative and executive branches through research, reports, data, testimony, and other communication; conducts public education to inform people of their rights and to advance gender equity; works in partnership to take action to improve the lives of Vermonters; and provides information and referrals to the public.

(VCW recognizes that gender is expansive and not binary, and our work includes those who identify as women, girls, transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, gender-questioning, and anyone who has experienced marginalization, bias, or barriers due to their gender identity.)

Position information
This position supports the VCW mission primarily through policy, planning, research, and analysis. They will work closely with the Executive Director and members of the Commission to set priorities, align research and communication strategies, and manage the day-to-day function of the commission.

Types of work may include: conducting research on issues related to women's well-being; collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating data relating to women's well-being; communicating research and data in a variety of forms, including written narratives (e.g., policy briefs, reports, and publications) tables, graphs, or other data visualizations for a wide variety of audiences, including the general public, employers, and policymakers; researching policy, laws, and legislation in other jurisdictions for use in developing Vermont policies; serving as a subject matter expert on issues of concern relating to women and girls, and to gender equity; contributing to public education efforts; representing the Commission on a variety of committees, coalitions, and partnerships; contributing to the development, creation, and implementation of VCW's policy priorities and statutory development work; and working with the Executive Director to identify needs, evaluate opportunities for change, and develop strategies for improving the advancement of the mission.

Work is done under the direction of the Executive Director and in active collaboration with other staff and members of the Commission. Working effectively as part of a team is critical, as is the ability to work independently, take initiative, solve problems, and be resourceful. VCW is a hybrid work environment, with work being done both in person and remotely.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in a standard office setting, or in the legislature, or in other community settings. Limited state travel may be involved for which private means of transportation may be required. Quick deadlines for important reports and need for sensitive communication under challenging and difficult situations may be required. Interacts and communicates directly with state and federal government administrators, staff, legislators, and the general public, sometimes under stressful conditions. Must manage many complex administrative and policy related issues at once, responding to dynamic priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in political science, gender studies, public policy, public administration, social work, economics, law, or related field AND two (2) years or more of experience in a leadership role

Bachelor’s degree in political science, gender studies, public policy, public administration, social work, economics, law, or related field AND four (4) or more years of experience in a leadership role.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional or volunteer experience in a field related to equity, social justice, and/or diversity/inclusion.
