JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: K-12 Counselor/Itinerant
Evaluated by: Principal/Assistant Principal
Job Description: The K-12 Counselor works collaboratively with other school and county staff to promote the intellectual, psychological and social development of students.
Qualifications: Holds or qualifies for a West Virginia Professional or Temporary Service Certificate endorsed for school counselor at the grade levels applicable to this assignment (K-12). Must have completed or be willing to complete the Trauma Sensitive Schools E-Learning class through the WV Department of Education.
Length of Employment: 210 Days
Responsibilities: The K-12 Counselor shall have the following responsibilities and duties:
1. To conduct appropriate individual and group counseling. Develop support groups for students as needed.
2. To provide appropriate support services to students and staff.
3. To communicate effectively with the educational community and parents/guardians as needed.
4. To collaborate with all stakeholders to coordinate the delivery of support services to students.
5. To assist with the coordination of student support services with other county support staff and attend regular Student Support Team meetings.
6. To coordinate supports to help remedy unsatisfactory student progress.
7. Create, safeguard, and maintain documentation necessary for rendering professional services.
8. To advise appropriate school staff of student related concerns to provide for the health and safety of all involved. Provide consultation with school staff regarding mental health issues.
9. To serve on Student Assistance Teams as necessary.
10. Provide crisis intervention based on the PREPARE Crisis model and serve on crisis intervention teams for the county.
11. Promote the overall emotional well-being of students by enhancing coping skills, promoting communication and social skills, enhancing the development of decision making skills, promoting quality family relationships, and other mental health related matters to help benefit the whole student.
12. To conduct periodic evaluations of the counseling program to guage effectiveness.
13. To meet professional responsibilities and maintain all licenses, certificates and continuing education requirements associated with this position. Follow all ethical standards involved with this position.
14. To complete and submit all reports in a timely manner as required by law, the West Virginia Department of Education, and/or the county Board of Education.
15. To report the presence of any situation that may be harmful to the health and safety of the students and/or staff.
16. To identify and refer for screening and evaluation any child with learning deficiencies.
17. To advise the principal of the presence of any situation that may require immediate intervention so as not to hinder the instructional program.
18. To supervise students in accordance with state, county and school policies.
19. To attend all faculty senate and other required meetings.
20. To accept reasonable extra duty assignments necessary for a successful school program.
21. To maintain professional work habits that respects the dignity and welfare of students and staff.
22. To maintain and upgrade professional skills.
23. To perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
