Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks a dynamic team leader to serve as the Career Counseling Officer (Scarlet Career Mentoring Course) within the Office of Career Exploration and Success at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Reporting to the Associate Director, Scarlet Career Mentoring Network, this role will lead and expand the Scarlet Career Mentoring Course, a career-focused mentoring initiative developed in partnership with the School of Management and Labor Relations that connects students with alumni and industry professionals through structured mentoring relationships, career exploration, and experiential learning opportunities.

A central responsibility of the position is the design, implementation, and expansion of mentoring-based programming that helps students develop career competencies, build professional networks, and gain exposure to career pathways across industries. Through the Scarlet Career Mentoring Course, students work directly with a mentor on a career-related job simulation project while engaging in structured networking, reflection, and professional development activities designed to strengthen career readiness and industry engagement. The Career Counseling Officer will recruit, onboard, and support mentors, coordinate mentor-student engagement activities, collaborate with campus and employer partners, and oversee course-related programming and operations in support of Rutgers University's broader efforts to build a career-ready campus.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Leads the development, implementation, and expansion of the Scarlet Career Mentoring Course in partnership with the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations.
  • Designs curriculum and instructional models that integrate mentoring, career readiness competencies, and career-related job simulation projects into a credit-bearing academic experience.
  • Recruits, onboards, trains, and supports alumni and industry mentors while building a scalable mentor engagement pipeline to support course delivery and expansion.
  • Develops and sustains partnerships with employers, alumni networks, faculty, and campus stakeholders to strengthen mentoring opportunities and experiential learning initiatives.
  • Supervises co-adjunct instructors and oversees course operations, including mentor integration, instructional consistency, scheduling, and student engagement activities.
  • Collaborates with academic and campus partners to assess course outcomes, refine curriculum, and support the continued growth of mentoring-based career development initiatives.
  • Provides individual and group career advising with an emphasis on mentoring, networking, and career development strategies.
  • Develops and delivers workshops, presentations, and professional development programming while supporting Rutgers University's broader efforts to integrate mentoring and career readiness across the student experience.
  • Participates in meetings, professional development activities, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Supports Rutgers University's visibility within the career services field through conference presentations, professional engagement, publications, and contributions to professional associations.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 or the applicable provisions of relevant collective negotiations agreements, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years of relevant experience or a master's degree with a minimum of three years of relevant experience in career services, mentoring and experiential learning programs, workforce development, employer engagement, academic program coordination, student affairs, or related higher education settings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to cultivate and sustain relationships with employers, alumni, faculty, and campus partners while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability in mentoring-based programming, curriculum or instructional coordination, workshop and presentation facilitation, student advising or coaching, and program development within a higher education or career development environment.
  • Independent judgment, attention to detail and leadership capabilities.
  • Proficiency with career management, learning management, and related technology platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher.
  • Experience within career services, workforce development, experiential learning, mentoring initiatives, employer relations, or industry engagement settings.
  • Experience developing academic courses, mentoring programs, or career readiness initiatives within higher education.

Equipment Utilized

  • Handshake career management or similar systems.
  • Sakai, Canvas, or similar learning management platforms.

Special Conditions

  • This position will require to work some nights and weekends.
