The Guidance Counselor assumes primary responsibility for providing counseling and guidance services at the building level for students. Duties include scheduling students, implementing testing programs, and acting as a consultant to parents regarding student progress and adjustment. They participate in the 8-Step Instruction and Remediation process, offer personal counseling, and utilize data to inform instructional decisions within a Professional Learning Community. The role involves advising teachers on student learning and behavior issues, guiding students in career development, assisting with financial aid, and referring students to outside agencies when needed. Additional responsibilities include student registration, orientation, coordinating case conferences, and designing innovative programs for adolescents and families, especially in urban settings. Qualifications require a Master’s degree in guidance and counseling, state licensure, experience with intermediate students, and strong rapport-building skills.
