Part-Time TAS Summer Counselor

About NASA High School Aerospace Scholars:
Texas Aerospace Scholars (TAS) is an immersive STEM learning opportunity for Texas students, designed to inspire the next generation of explorers through direct engagement with NASA’s missions and STEM career pathways.


Counselors are responsible for guiding teams of 10-15 rising high school seniors through Base Camp, a NASA onsite STEM experience at Johnson Space Center, including offsite activities. Counselors will report to a lead counselor, work with the Texas Aerospace Scholars team, and:

  • Direct a team of students while promoting a positive work environment, encouraging cooperation, collaboration, and co-ownership of success.
  • Use best teaching practices to engage and support students in all program activities throughout the week resulting in a challenging and engaging STEM experience that exceeds the expectations of NASA, the students, and their families.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to ensure students work safely and use time, equipment, and resources efficiently.
  • Become familiar with and help monitor and enforce all program rules and regulations for students on all teams while exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and professional manner during onsite activities and as a chaperone in the hotel in the evenings.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to remain calm and positive when asked to adapt to changes or take on additional responsibilities.
  • Communicate frequently, honestly, and openly with lead counselors to seek guidance when needed, listen attentively, and assume responsibility for resolving difficulties appropriately; and
  • Foster relationships among students in which all individuals are valued, appreciated, and included while actively endorsing and supporting NASA's mission.

Qualifications

Required: Must be able to commit to:

  • Virtual and in person training (Virtual: July 7, 2026, In Person: July 23 – 25, 2026)
  • Availability to work onsite program period at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (July 26 – 31, 2026)
  • Ability to reside in the same lodging as students and counselors during the program

Degree: Bachelor's Degree, Masters preferred

Certifications, Registrations, or Licenses: Valid Texas Teaching Certification required.

Must be certified in and reside in the state of Texas.

Field of Study: Education or Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics Education

Experience: Three years of successful classroom teaching experience in grades K-12 or college level required.

Compensation: The compensation for this opportunity is $1000 for the one week experience and any associated training. Cost of transportation, lodging, and food covered by program.

Salary Grade: AH

Salary is based on the Board-approved salary schedule for the current fiscal year. See Salary Schedule
