Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Position Summary
The Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) provides clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for individuals, couples, and families experiencing behavioral health and substance use disorders. The LMFT utilizes systemic and evidence-based therapeutic approaches to address relational dynamics and improve overall functioning.
This role delivers services in accordance with Indiana licensure standards, ethical guidelines, and organizational policies, and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to support patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis
- Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments
- Evaluate individual, family, and relational dynamics impacting mental health and substance use
- Diagnose behavioral health and co-occurring disorders using DSM-5 criteria
- Identify risk factors including safety concerns, trauma history, and relapse potential
- Develop individualized, family-centered treatment plans
- Establish measurable goals and therapeutic interventions
- Regularly review and update treatment plans based on patient progress
- Provide:
- Individual therapy
- Family therapy
- Couples counseling
- Facilitate group therapy when appropriate
- Apply evidence-based modalities such as:
- Family Systems Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Trauma-informed care
- Solution-Focused Therapy
- Address interpersonal conflict, communication issues, and family roles
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members including:
- Physicians
- APRNs
- Nurses
- Case managers
- Substance use counselors
- Coordinate referrals and transitions of care (e.g., outpatient, IOP, residential)
- Engage with families and support systems as clinically appropriate
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the EMR, including:
- Assessments
- Progress notes
- Treatment plans
- Discharge summaries
- Ensure compliance with:
- Indiana state regulations
- HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 (when applicable)
- Accreditation standards (Joint Commission/CARF, if applicable)
- Participate in audits, chart reviews, and quality improvement activities
- Assess and respond to crisis situations, including:
- Suicidal ideation
- Family conflict escalation
- Psychiatric instability
- Implement appropriate interventions and escalate care when necessary
- Provide psychoeducation on:
- Mental health conditions
- Addiction (if applicable)
- Relationship dynamics
- Promote patient-centered and trauma-informed care
- Support a safe, respectful, and therapeutic environment
Required
- Active Indiana LMFT license (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist)
- Master’s degree in:
- Marriage and Family Therapy
- Counseling
- Psychology
- Or related behavioral health field
- Experience in:
- Behavioral health treatment
- Family or couples therapy
- Knowledge of DSM-5 and systemic therapy approaches
- Experience in:
- Substance use disorder treatment or dual diagnosis
- Detox, residential, or intensive outpatient settings
- Familiarity with:
- ASAM criteria
- Trauma-informed care models
- Experience working in interdisciplinary healthcare teams
- Strong understanding of family systems and relational dynamics
- Advanced therapeutic and counseling skills
- Effective communication with patients, families, and care teams
- Crisis management and de-escalation abilities
- High level of documentation accuracy and compliance awareness
