Basic Qualifications


Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent; AWS certification, preferred though not required; AAR M-1003 and AAR M-1002 Quality Assurance Program knowledge; OSHA or other safety related certifications preferred


Skill(s): Proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills; ability to read blueprints and understand engineering terminology; proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills; proficient teaching skills; strong supervisory/leadership qualities; skilled in inspection procedures and quality control practices related to railcar maintenance; ability to conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions; in-depth knowledge of railcar systems, including brakes, couplers, structural components, and truck assemblies; strong understanding of AAR and FRA regulations and ability to enforce compliancedemonstrated knowledge of AAR M-1003 and AAR M-1002 Quality Assurance Program; adept in fleet maintenance programs or railcar leasing operations; proficient PC skills including Office products and information technology related to various industries; visual and auditory skills.


Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in railcar repair or mechanical maintenance, with 2+ years in a supervisory or leadership role. 


Working Conditions: Ability to stand, sit, bend, reach, climb, and lift items weighing 40lbs. or less; work in excessive noise environment; work in extreme temperatures and elements for an extended period of time; work in confined spaces and at elevated heights; operate heavy machinery, power tools, or equipmenthandle hazardous, volatile, or flammable materials; and exposure to excessive noise. 

 

 

General Responsibilities


Responsible for performing a variety of duties to support the railroad division; hands-on operation of all equipment in the machine shop with the ability and willingness to train other employees, coordinating work within the department, as well as with other departments; reporting pertinent information to the owners; responding to inquiries or requests for information. 

This position falls under the company's safety-sensitive category. Successful candidates must comply with all company safety policies and procedures, including a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy and are subject to pre-employment, random, post-incident, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.

 

Essential Duties


Performs a variety of duties to support the railroad division: 

 

Discuss with staff daily goals and requirements.

 

Communicate with management on work schedule including future projects.

 

Confirm parts are ready for fabrication on time. Execute fabrication of rail assemblies via reading blueprints, designing and building necessary jigs / fixtures, welding parts accurately and within tolerances specified on prints.

 

Assist engineering with new designs, existing designs, and problem parts.

 

Provide solutions to problems that arise in the plant.

 

Prepare second and third shift set up by laying out in detail what needs done. Ensure proper drawings and materials are available.

 

Coordinates specific work tasks with other personnel within the department as well as with other departments to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information.

 

Participates with Plant Manager in establishing specific goals for each division; implements strategies to achieve these goals.

 

Communicates with Plant Manager and appropriate staff personnel to integrate activities.

 

 

 

Directly supervises assigned personnel as follows:


a. Assists in the selection of new personnel as appropriate.

 

b. Makes provisions for the proper orientation and training of new personnel; trains new personnel as required.

 

c. Reviews employee performance throughout the orientation period and on a regular scheduled basis thereafter.

 

d. Organizes, schedules, and distributes work among assigned personnel.

 

e. Keeps personnel informed of pertinent policies and procedures affecting the department and/or their jobs; creates an atmosphere in which upward communication from employees is encouraged.

 

f. Administers personnel policies and procedures as established by company policy.

 

Abides by the current laws and organizational policies and procedures designed and implemented to promote an environment which is free of harassment and other forms of illegal discriminatory behavior in the workplace.

 

Cooperates with, participates in, and supports the adherence to all internal policies, procedures, and practices in support of risk management and overall safety and soundness and the company’s compliance with all regulatory requirements.


Reports pertinent information to the immediate supervisor as requested, or according to an established schedule; compiles information as necessary or as directed and provides data to appropriate personnel (much of this information in regard to QC and ISO data that is audited and tracked for compliance).


Responds to inquiries relating to his/her particular area, or to requests from customers, other personnel, etc., within given time frames and within established policy.
