JOB DESCRIPTION:


To develop and implement a comprehensive counseling program to address the academic, career and personal/social goals for students at risk of abusing illegal substances.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Main responsibility: High School Level Substance and Drug Abuse Prevention Counselor/ Instructor/ Team Member.

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive counseling program which aligns with the APS Counseling Resource Guide.

  • Plans and implements the counseling program to address the academic, career and personal/social needs of every student.

  • Coordinates delivery of an annual needs assessment for the counseling program.

  • Delivers the four program components: the counseling curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and system support.

  • Provides short-term individual and group counseling opportunities for students to promote school success, personal growth, self-understanding, communication, problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Assists families by providing referrals to outside services for students with acute or chronic substance abuse/mental health needs.

  • Orients students and parents regarding current and future educational goals and career objectives.

  • Assists in curriculum development, professional development and identification of interventions to assist students.

  • Consults with administration, staff and parents regarding substance abuse/mental health issues in order to assist students with attitude, learning and/or behavioral problems.

  • Serves on the school health/wellness team.

  • Completes and submits the monthly counselor accountability report to the Counseling Manager.

  • Evaluates the counseling program on an annual basis for continuous improvement.

  • Regularly attends APS district counseling meetings to keep current on policies, procedures and best practices regarding school counseling programs and issues.

  • Serves as a Parent Involvement Program Facilitator.



PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Valid certification or license as alcohol and drug counselor and/or five years of clinical experience in the area of chemical dependency and working with youth and families in drug and alcohol field.
  • Experience working in Substance Abuse Prevention and/or skills working with adolescents/youth within school settings.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations both in-person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of others.
  • Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect.
  • Knowledge of all laws, regulations and guidelines affecting teachers and students.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members and staff.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling.
  • Valid New Mexico License in School Counseling.
  • Three years of experience in a public school setting or counseling environment.
  • Counseling skills in a range of diverse needs, including college/career information and mediation/conflict resolution.
