Location: Laguna Hills, CA

Department: Cancer Risk & Prevention Program

Status: Full-Time

Shift: Exempt

Pay Range*: $109,054.40 - $158,100.80/annually

Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center's strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.

The Genetics Counselor is responsible for evaluating and counseling individuals and families regarding cancer risk and risk management, including those at risk of hereditary disease. Assists with the collection of all program data and design of clinical trials as necessary. The Genetics Counselor will provide and report to the supervisor genetic expert content on accreditation by government, professional agencies and financial reimbursement requirements in support of genetic program initiatives.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  1. Collects family histories, constructs accurate pedigrees, and coordinates lab draws for testing
  2. Performs Pedigree assessment and recognition of cancer susceptibility syndromes (risk analysis calculations)
  3. Completes post-test counseling, risk management, including review of medical management options
  4. Successfully evaluates and counsels individuals and families regarding end to end cancer treatment plan and risk assessment.
  5. Provides information and supports patients and their families who are concerned with risk of inherited conditions specifically relating to cancer risk.
  6. Advises of pedigree and/or testing outcome of hereditary disease in partnership with physician
  7. Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner.
  8. Ability to prioritize and multitask
  9. Ability to be at work and be on time.
  10. Ability to follow company policies, procedures, and directives


*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • 1 Year experience in cancer genetics counseling preferred
  • Previous experience in counseling and testing genetic risk
  • Knowledge of billing and reconciliation of insurance process and payment


Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Completion of training in formal Genetic Counseling program Master's degree
  • American Board of Genetics Counseling/Licensed Genetic Counselor within 9 months of hire
  • Genetic Counselor license from the CDPH
  • New graduate must have a temporary license assigned from the CDPH
