Position Summary:
The Overnight Counselor is responsible for the supervision, accountability, and monitoring of residents assigned through the New Jersey Department of Corrections Residential Community Release Program (RCRP). This position ensures compliance with all DOC contractual requirements, facility policies, and applicable State of New Jersey regulations during overnight hours. The counselor maintains a safe, secure, and structured environment while supporting residents’ rehabilitation and reentry process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain direct supervision and accountability of all residents in accordance with RCRP and NJ DOC standards
- Conduct and document scheduled and random bed checks and facility rounds per policy
- Enforce all RCRP rules, curfews, counts, and movement procedures
- Complete formal resident counts at required intervals and reconcile discrepancies immediately
- Monitor compliance with authorized movements, passes, and sign-in/sign-out procedures
- Administer and document breathalyzer, urine screens, and other monitoring protocols as required by DOC guidelines
- Prepare and submit incident reports, unusual occurrence reports, and disciplinary documentation in accordance with NJ DOC reporting timelines
- Immediately report escapes, walk-aways, contraband, or violations to supervisory staff and follow chain-of-command notification procedures
- Maintain log books and electronic records in compliance with audit and inspection standards
- Conduct intake/orientation procedures for new admissions during overnight hours when applicable
- Utilize approved de-escalation techniques and respond to behavioral or medical emergencies following facility and DOC protocols
- Ensure facility security, including monitoring entrances/exits, alarms, and restricted areas
- Communicate effectively with custody staff, case management, and incoming shifts to ensure continuity of supervision
