Job Purpose

The Substance Abuse Counselor will work closely with their Administrative Assistant and Substance Use Supervisor to manage their caseload. This position is responsible for providing outpatient counseling services to individuals with substance abuse issues. Counseling services will include, but are not limited to, the following: coordinating resources and referrals within the community, supporting the client in their personal adjustment to the community after being incarcerated, encouraging cognitive behavioral changes, and conducting risk assessments. Regular communication with the client assigned supervising officer must be performed to provide therapeutic recommendations for further treatment.


Job Responsibilities
This position will involve, but not be limited to, the following duties:

  • Conduct Individual one (1) hour sessions as authorized.
  • Facilitate multiple groups, one and a half (1 1/2) hour sessions per week, which are CBT-oriented and manualized.
  • Communicate regularly with the Residential Re-Entry Center Case Managers regarding client attendance and appointments.
  • Utilize computer applications to complete clinical documentation.
  • Develop initial and updated treatment plans quarterly.
  • Complete intake ASI assessment when authorized.
  • Complete Monthly Treatment Reports for the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons.
  • Complete Discharge Summaries.
  • Attend training sessions, staff development, and other in-service training as directed by management.


Applicant Specification
Essential Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Substance Abuse Certification in the State of California.
  • Must have a minimum of one year of experience in the Substance Abuse Counseling Field.
  • Detail-oriented, team player, organizational skills, enthusiastic about learning, adaptability to new policies and procedures as the federal government identifies them, and strong communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate a proficient level of professional boundaries.

Full–Time Employee Salary Range: $24.00 - $30.00


Schedule: Monday and Friday day shifts - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday early afternoon and evening shifts required to meet the available needs of the clients. The work schedule is flexible, and the counselor will establish their work schedule to meet the needs of the client's authorized services.
