People with substance use disorders face far too many barriers to recovery; we help break them down. Focusing on the whole-person, we provide not only treatment, by a full spectrum of support and resources to help navigate the journey to recovery.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The SUD Counselor will work specifically with individuals presenting with a primary substance use disorder at Home of New Vision’s short-term residential treatment facility. The SUD Counselor will facilitate clinical and life-skill groups - utilizing evidenced-based practices to include, but not limited to cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. This individual will also be asked to assist with a small caseload for individual therapy and/or assist with intake and discharge appointments.
DESCRIPTION:
- Facilitate clinical and life-skill groups
- Assess, diagnose and counsel individuals with substance use disorders, and often co-occurring mental health diagnoses, in an individual and group setting
- Document client records according to the policies and procedures of HNV
- Participate in general staff activities (i.e. staff meetings and clinical case consultation)
- Maintain necessary licensing and certification requirements for credentialing
- Participates in performance reviews as appropriate
- Other duties as assigned by the Clinical Supervisor

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field with a development plan (or willingness to obtain one) and/or certification through the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals.
- Minimum of two years' experience in the substance abuse field, with at least two years specifically working with individuals with substance use disorders, preferred.
- Experience should include therapeutic practices, group facilitation, and an understanding of addiction recovery principles, preferred.
- The candidate will work under the direction of the Clinical Supervisor and Residential Program Manager.
- Current working knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, including but not limited to confidentiality, suicidal ideation and homicidal ideation, child abuse, and mandated reporting requirements.
- An essential criterion is the employee's awareness and sensitivity to client rights, including issues of confidentiality and ethics.
- Pay for this position is based on experience, education, and professional credentialing and certification.
EXPECTATIONS:
The employee will have the ability to provide clinical care based on sound theoretical knowledge. This employee is required to perform complete thorough, individualized, accurate and effective diagnostic assessments utilizing the ASAM Continuum Standardized Assessment. This employee needs to have the ability to maintain their caseload of assigned clients at expected level of productivity. They must be able to formulate and design treatment that is responsive to the individualized needs of each client served, along with effectively facilitating the termination process.
PERFORMANCE REVIEWS:
Written and verbal reviews will be conducted annually and/or as appropriate. The Clinical Supervisor will complete the performance review and will meet with the employee to read and discuss this review. A copy will be given to the employee and the original will be kept in the employee file in a locked cabinet.
Pay: From $19.00 per hour
