The nurse practitioner hired for this position will be expected to provide high quality, evidence-based psychiatric care to University of Virginia students in compliance with the medical staff bylaws of the Department of SHW. Excellent clinical and interpersonal skills are required.
The individual must show demonstrated competency in the areas of psychiatric diagnostic evaluation; medication evaluation; ongoing medication prescribing and monitoring; provision of comprehensive psychiatric care including supportive psychotherapy, psychoeducation, risk assessment, crisis management, case management, clinical consultation, collaborative co-treatment with multidisciplinary mental health clinicians, and ethical decision-making. The ability to ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements and provide the highest quality psychiatric care to patients is essential.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Provide Psychiatric Assessment and Treatment
- Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessments for purposes of diagnostic evaluations, treatment planning, counseling, identifying referral needs, provision of psychiatric care, and medication management of patients seen through CAPS.
- See patients for ongoing psychiatric care including medication prescribing and monitoring.
- Provide psychoeducation, recommendations and guidance to patients and families as indicated
- Refer patients for specialty care, higher level of care, and/or longer-term care as clinically indicated.
- Meet all standards of clinical care set forth through SHW Policies and Procedures.
- Adhere to Nurse Practitioner/Physician Collaborative Practice Agreement Standards, including collaboration and consultation with physician(s) named in collaborative practice agreement, especially for high acuity patients and those with complex presentations.
- Engage in clinical/administration supervision as determined by CAPS Associate Director of Psychiatric Services.
- Patient care activities may include supervision and instruction of nurse practitioner students, in compliance with approved teaching agreements. This will include one-on-one teaching, oversight of patient care, and providing feedback.
- Keep timely and sufficient medical records in compliance with SHW documentation policies and procedures
- Participate collegially in departmental administrative functions.
- Use SHW electronic medical record for documentation of clinical care.
- Meet minimum standards on departmental peer review processes.
- Engage in administrative work pertaining to job functions. This may include serving on Student Health and Wellness committees or subcommittees.
- Work collaboratively in co-treatment of patients with other CAPS and SHW providers, as well as community providers and other treatment partners.
- Participate in treatment team meetings.
- Work collaboratively with all professionals and administrators in SHW.
- Consult with non-psychiatric CAPS providers and other Student Health & Wellness providers on an as-needed basis
- Attend SHW/CAPS departmental meetings as required.
- Attend weekly CAPS Psychiatry meeting.
- Maintain positive relationships with coworkers.
- Perform psychiatric mental health (PMH) independent professional advanced practice nursing duties in accordance with established policies, procedures and the ANA PMH Standards of Practice.
- Consistently demonstrate competencies of advanced practice in PMH Nursing: comprehensive psychiatric assessment, counseling, psychiatric medication evaluation and prescribing, case management, consultation, risk assessment and crisis intervention, clinical and professional leadership, collaboration, ethical decision-making, expert coaching and guiding.
- Ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that the highest quality clinical care is provided to patients.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with clinicians, physicians and administrators to achieve quality care.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal; critical analysis skills; problem solving skills and prioritization/time management skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing with a master's degree or higher.
- Certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
- Experience: 3 years of clinical experience providing psychiatric care to patients, including to the young adult population. Experience in assessment and treatment of common presentations in this population, including but not limited to: bipolar disorder, first episode psychosis, eating disorders, ADHD and substance use disorders.
- Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner) as set forth by the Commonwealth of Virginia. License to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
- Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies.
- Active Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Registration required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
- A working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
