Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Success Initiatives, the Temporary Faculty Counselor serves as a key member of the Counseling and Advising Center team, supporting students in achieving their academic and career goals. Responsibilities include providing guidance and advising, teaching student development courses (with approval), and contributing to committee work, curriculum planning, and innovative student success initiatives. Faculty Counselors are expected to stay current with developments in the counseling field and actively participate in professional growth activities.

Essential Tasks

Provide information and guidance to students regarding academic, professional, technical, and developmental programs, transfer requirements, and other institutions.
Offer individual and group counseling to students.
Lead, mentor, or coordinate services for specific systematically disadvantaged populations as assigned.
Refer students to community health resources for long-term assistance.
Assist students in developing effective study skills.
Provide career guidance and placement information.
Teach student development classes with approval from the Assistant Dean of Student Success Initiatives.
Participate in committee work, planning, research, and implementation of innovative initiatives.
Engage in course and curriculum planning, in-service training, and meetings.
Stay updated on developments in the counseling field.
Assist students with reviewing and completing graduation applications.
Assist or lead training for faculty and curriculum advisors on the college’s advising and orientation functions.
Stay current on credit equivalencies YVC accepts from other colleges and universities.
Use online resources including college catalog, registration ctcLink system, pathway advising tool and other resources available.
Maintain accurate records of student contacts, time and effort and written correspondence as appropriate.
Collaborate and consult with the counseling and advising team and other college personnel.
Maintain a flexible work schedule and environment as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, School Counseling, or Clinical Social Work from a regionally accredited institution.
Professional and educational preparation that includes:
- Assessing client needs, environments, strengths, and support networks to help clients identify their goals.
- Demonstrated experience with crisis response, triaging, and/or crisis management, treatment planning.
- Work in fundamentals of counseling, lifespan development, and multicultural counseling, theories of counseling.
- Career development and career counseling.
Experience collaborating and consulting with multidisciplinary teams.
Five or more years of experience in counseling services to include personal, academic and career counseling in a community college, university, high school, mental health, or social service field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

An understanding of academic advising and career counseling theory and models.
Student development work experience in higher education.
Teaching experience in higher education.
Demonstrated success working on behalf of students or clients of color, low-income backgrounds, disabilities or other traditionally marginalized students, identifying performance and outcome gaps and developing effective strategies to address the causes of those differences and assist with aspirational goal setting.
Multilingual, American Sign Language, Spanish, Native Languages or other.

ABILITY TO:

Research, refer, and advocate for community resources.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Systemic oppression, racism, and equity concepts and applications in teaching, advising, and serving.
