Job Summary
The Substance Abuse Counselor provides clinical services to individuals with substance use disorders, supporting recovery through assessment, treatment planning, counseling, and case management. This role follows North Carolina regulatory standards and works toward improving clients’ overall mental, emotional, and behavioral health.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct clinical assessments, including substance use history and co-occurring mental health conditions
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in accordance with North Carolina substance abuse treatment guidelines
- Provide individual, group, and family counseling using evidence-based practices (e.g., CBT, motivational interviewing)
- Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with state regulations and Medicaid/insurance requirements
- Monitor client progress and update treatment plans as needed
- Provide relapse prevention planning and recovery support
- Coordinate care with physicians, mental health providers, and community resources
- Facilitate psychoeducational groups on addiction, coping skills, and life skills
- Respond to crisis situations and provide appropriate interventions
- Ensure compliance with confidentiality laws such as HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2
