The San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) Counseling and Matriculation Division seeks an innovative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to student success for a full-time tenure track position. SBVC is a designated Hispanic and Black Serving Institution with a majority of our students identifying themselves as either Latinx or African American/Black. At the heart of the Inland Empire, SBVC is a driving factor to improve the lives of our students, their families, and our communities. We are seeking an individual to join our Counseling Department that is fully committed to transformational, culturally responsive education.

Representative Duties:

The following duties are typical of those performed by faculty in this classification. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

This posting is to fill a full-time, (198 working days) tenure track Counselor position. The Counselor shall perform all regularly assigned duties that include academic, career, and personal counseling including follow-up services. Specific responsibilities include evaluating student transcripts, and assisting students with career decisions, in person and on-line education planning which includes creating comprehensive student education plans, transfer guidance and course selection. Evening and some weekend work will be required as part of this position. Counselors work in an environment that requires the highest level of integrity, confidentiality, ethical practices, innovation, collegiality, teamwork, and adaptability to San Bernardino Valley College's campus culture in support of student success.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

(To be specified in accordance with California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office Faculty Minimum Qualifications)
Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family, and child counseling.

NOTE: a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5 section 53410.1.
  • If you believe to have the experience equivalent to the minimum qualifications for an academic position, you may request a determination of equivalency by completing a District Request for Equivalency form and provide supporting documentation as appropriate.

AND
Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Two years of full-time experience, or four years of part-time paid higher education counseling experience with an emphasis on education planning.
  • One year of full time or two years of part time paid higher education experience working with dual enrollment programs.
  • One year of college teaching experience in career and student development courses.
  • One year of experience using career assessment tools and career counseling computer programs such as EUREKA, Discover, SIGI, Career Cafe, or comparable programs.
  • One year of experience implementing intervention programs or strategies to support student success.
  • Experience in working with students who are undecided/undeclared about majors and careers.
  • Experience in conducting student orientations, workshops, and follow up services for special student populations.

Employment Requirements


  • The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
  • Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
  • Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement).
  • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment.
  • Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule). The salary posted in the job listing reflects the range from the starting minimum to the maximum placement, which is determined based on the candidate's education and experience once the position is offered and the salary placement paperwork is submitted to the Office of Human Resources.
  • Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).

Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements is mandatory to be eligible for employment. These requirements are in accordance with the San Bernardino Community College District's Administrative Procedures and Board Policies.
