Job Title:SASSO Intern - Assistant Athletic Academic Counselor

Department:Undergraduate Education | Student Athlete Support Services

Primary Responsibilities

The Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) is seeking candidates for the Assistant Athletic Academic Counselor (AAAC) position in the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE). This position will assist SASSO staff in monitoring and supporting a select group of Ohio State’s 36 varsity teams. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to serve as an academic coach for a group of students from diverse backgrounds, focusing on helping them with time management, student advocacy, decision making, tutorial support, organizational strategies, and study skill enhancement during their transition to the university. The AAAC will prepare and organize a variety of academic reports and communication materials, attend staff meetings, and participate in regular trainings designed for their professional growth and development

Additional Responsibilities:

The AAAC will work directly with and assist our Academic Counseling staff and an assigned caseload of student-athletes. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, communicating with SASSO staff, students, coaches, campus partners, and administrators; assisting in monitoring eligibility and progress towards degree; meeting with prospective student-athletes and their families and/or support systems during the recruitment process; working with college advisors to assist student-athletes regarding university degree programs and requirements, academic standards and general course selection as it pertains to progress towards degree, career and academic goals, and athletic commitments; providing reports and academic updates for coaching and administrative staff; supporting counselors in monitoring admissions process for new first-year students and transfers.

Must adhere to NCAA rules and the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA). Must have strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail (specifically excel worksheets) and the ability to set appropriate professional boundaries while maintaining confidentiality. Collaborates with SASSO staff and campus partners to support all student-athlete development programs. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings and weekends. Ability to communicate effectively and accurately, both orally and written. The intern cohort will work with students to foster an environment of self-discipline, personal accountability, academic integrity, and personal wellness. Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

This is a 12-month term position. Anticipated duration (June – May).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working with students
  • Experience working with a variety of technology platforms
  • Nuanced understanding of issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
  • Desire to obtain full time employment in the student-athlete support services industry

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred in education, student-affairs, sport management, counseling and/or similar area
  • Experience working with student-athletes
  • Experience in education or teaching
  • Experience mentoring students in a one-on-one environment
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience navigating and understanding college curricula

The hourly rate for this position is $20/hr.
