Affirming Psychological Services (APS), California

Affirming Psychological Services (APS) is a values-driven psychology practice providing trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+ affirming, neurodivergent-affirming, sex-positive, kink-affirming, and culturally responsive care to teens and adults across California. Our work centers marginalized communities, with a strong focus on LGBTQIA+ clients, gender-diverse individuals, neurodivergent clients, and people impacted by systemic oppression and trauma.

We are seeking a licensed Clinical Supervisor to join our team in a telehealth role (to begin), with the option to move into a hybrid position as office space becomes available in mid-2026. This role combines clinical supervision with a meaningful clinical caseload and is designed for clinicians who value ethical supervision, clear expectations, strong organization, and systems-aware clinical work within an insurance-based practice.

About the Role

  • Provide clinical supervision to prelicensed clinicians across license types, including AMFTs, APCCs, ASWs, psychological associates, and psychology trainees
  • Review cases during supervision sessions and provide clinical guidance
  • Complete supervision-related documentation, including note review, care plan review, and required signatures
  • Carry a clinical caseload (telehealth initially)
  • Optional in-person clinical hours available now on weekends or mornings, with more office availability opening in mid-2026.
  • Opportunity to transition to a hybrid role as office space expands

This is an hourly position, paid only for time worked. Both full-time and part-time positions are available, however full time availability is highly desired.

Full-Time Definition

APS defines full-time employment as 22 hours per week of required face-to-face work.

Face-to-face time includes:

  • Direct supervision with supervisees (individual or group)
  • Direct clinical sessions with clients

Administrative work, documentation, training, meetings, and preparation time are paid, but do not count toward the 22-hour face-to-face requirement.

Typical breakdown examples:

  • A supervisor with 6 full-time supervisees generally spends 8–9 hours per week in supervision and would carry approximately 13–14 client-facing hours to meet full-time status
  • Supervisors with fewer supervisees carry a proportionally higher clinical caseload
  • Many clinicians schedule above the minimum to account for cancellations

Part-time arrangements are available. Health benefits require full-time status.

Compensation

$65/hour for face-to-face supervision time

$55/hour for all other time worked, including:

  • client sessions
  • documentation and administrative work
  • initial training and onboarding
  • required meetings and trainings

APS is an insurance-based practice. Compensation reflects the realities of sustainable, ethical care within that model. All working time is paid.

Benefits

Available to all employees (part-time and full-time):

  • 401(k) with partial employer match
  • Paid sick time (1 hour for every 30 hours worked)
  • Paid vacation time (4% of hours worked)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Available to full-time employees (22+ face-to-face hours/week):

  • Health benefits, partially paid for by employer
  • APS covers 50% of the premium for an Aetna Silver health plan
  • Employees may elect an Aetna Platinum plan and pay the difference in premium
  • Dependents may be added at the employee’s expense
  • Dental and vision benefits, partially paid for by employer
  • APS covers 50% of dental and vision premiums

Workload Transparency and Organization Expectations

APS values clarity, efficiency, and sustainability. Client sessions are scheduled 60 minutes apart, with sessions typically lasting around 55 minutes, allowing clinicians to use the final minutes between sessions to reset or begin documentation.

Typical averages:

  • Approximately 1 hour of admin/documentation time for every 6 client sessions seen
  • Approximately 30–45 minutes of admin time for every 10 client sessions seen by supervisees, focused on note review, care plan review, and required signatures. Case conceptualization and discussion occur during supervision sessions

This role is best suited for clinicians who are organized, timely, and comfortable working within clear documentation systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Active California license (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, or Psychologist)
  • Licensed for a minimum of 2 years
  • Meets California requirements to provide clinical supervision
  • Completion of required supervisor training and ability to supervise under BBS guidelines
  • Comfortable supervising or supporting clinicians across multiple license/associate types.
  • Strong clinical judgment and comfort supporting complex cases
  • Comfortable working within an insurance-based practice
  • Comfortable providing services via telehealth
  • Active CAQH profile, or willingness to create and maintain one prior to beginning work

Supervision Experience

  • Prior supervision experience is desired, but not required
  • Candidates must already be eligible and trained to supervise at the time of hire

Required Clinical Orientation and Values Alignment

APS is not a neutral practice. Applicants must be aligned with the following:

  • Active practice from an LGBTQIA+ affirming framework, including competence working with trans and nonbinary clients
  • Neurodivergent-affirming practice, including respectful, strengths-based work with autistic, ADHD, and otherwise neurodivergent clients and clinicians
  • Commitment to anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed care
  • Comfort working within a sex-positive and kink-affirming clinical framework
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing self-reflection around bias, power, and privilege
  • Comfort working with clients whose identities, families, relationships, and values may differ from your own
  • Clinical practice that affirms bodily autonomy, diverse family structures, and marginalized identities

This role is not a good fit for clinicians who view affirming care as optional, secondary, or ideological.

How to Apply

Please submit your Resume or CV and a brief cover letter describing:

  • your eligibility and readiness to provide clinical supervision, and
  • your approach to LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent-, and sex- and kink-positive affirming clinical work

Applications that do not address both supervision readiness and values alignment may not be considered.
