Job Summary
Xavier University of Louisiana is accepting applications for a Mental Health Counselor. The Mental Health Counselor conducts intakes and provides short-term counseling for a diverse student population with evidence-based techniques and interventions for individual, couples, group counseling and crisis intervention. The mental health counselor will also assist with mental health programming with workshops/ presentations, and consult in accordance with ethical guidelines with students, faculty, staff, and families. Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work (required)
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), [preferred], Licensed Master Social Worker, (Currently licensed in Louisiana to provide counseling services)
  • 1-3 years or prior experience in collegiate and/or clinical setting.
  • Experience with utilizing evidence-based techniques and interventions for a historically underserved population with culturally competent care
  • Experience providing telehealth health counseling services and utilizing a EHR system.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work (required)
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) (preferred) (Currently licensed in Louisiana to provide counseling services)
  • 1-3 years or prior experience in collegiate and/or clinical setting.
  • Experience with utilizing evidence-based techniques and interventions for a historically underserved population with culturally competent care.
  • Prior experience working with adolescents and or adults

Work Hours
40 hours per week (2 full time-counselor positions available)

  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and time management skills
  • Ability to be work collaboratively with colleagues


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Description
  • Strictly follow all ethical standards of the mental health profession including professional code of ethics whether ACA, NASW, APA, and or ADRA and follow federal confidentiality, FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
  • Conduct intakes and provide individual, group or couples counseling as well as crisis intervention and case management to promote efficacy of care for clients.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with client and monitor client’s clinical progress.
  • Maintain accurate and current clinical records within the Electronic Health Record system regarding progress notes, phone/email notes, treatment plans, counseling informed consent, termination summaries and relevant forms in accordance with Counseling & Psychiatric Services policy and procedures.
  • Consult with Counseling & Psychiatric Services team regarding clinical matters and crisis
  • Consult and collaborate with Student Health, Office of Disability Services, Faculty/Staff in accordance with ethical guidelines
  • Serves on Counseling & Psychiatric Services on-call emergency response rotation as determined by supervisor and staffing.
  • Provide referral and follow-up to community agencies per ethical guidelines and collaborate with the Care Coordinator regarding client referral.
  • Attend Counseling & Psychiatric Services staff meetings
  • Engage in continuing education via on-campus and external training for professional competence
  • Provide mental health workshops or campus outreach
  • Act as a liaison between Xavier and other mental health, medical and social services agencies serving the mental health needs of the Xavier student population.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including Orientation and Commencement
