A Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) is a person who, by education and experience, is certified by the Board to perform under appropriate supervision or direction, the following substance abuse treatment functions:
- Screening, intake, orientation, the administration of substance abuse assessment instruments, recovery and relapse prevention planning, substance abuse treatment, case management, substance abuse or dependence crisis intervention, client education, referral activities, record keeping, and consultation with other professionals.
- Supervised experience (as a CSAC Supervisee) is a prerequisite for certification before applying for CSAC Certification by Examination.
Core Responsibilities
1. Direct Client Support
- Participate in screening, intake, and orientation for clients entering substance use programs.
- Assist in conducting assessments and help develop individualized treatment plans under supervision.
- Provide individual and group counseling support following evidence-based treatment protocols.
- Co-facilitate recovery and educational groups.
2. Case Management & Care Coordination
- Support case management including linking clients with community resources.
- Assist with care coordination and communication with treatment team members.
3. Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate clinical records (EHR/charting, progress notes, service plans) within required deadlines.
- Adhere to privacy/HIPAA standards and agency policies.
4. Supervision & Professional Growth
- Receive regular supervision hours from an approved CSAC supervisor as required by board regulations.

Typical Qualification Requirements
Education & Credentials
- Active Virginia CSAC Supervisee registration with the Board of Counseling. Virginia Health Professions
- Completed academic coursework (bachelor’s or higher) and required substance abuse training hours. Virginia Health Professions
Skills & Experience
- Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders and often with co-occurring mental health conditions. Indeed
- Good communication, organization, and computer documentation skills. Indeed
- Prior experience in group facilitation, case management, or behavioral health services.
Pay: $50.00 - $60.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10.0 – 15.0 per week
