The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and organized Animal Intake Coordinator to join our Shelter Operations team. This role is vital in managing the intake process of animals, ensuring accurate documentation, and facilitating smooth communication between partner shelters and pet owners. The ideal candidate will possess excellent administrative skills, familiarity with veterinary terminology and dog/cat behavior as well as a compassionate approach to animal care. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient operation of our animal resource center by managing intake procedures accurately while providing compassionate support to pet owners. Key Duties
- Responsible for maintaining animal flow into the facility through coordination and regular communication with shelter operations management team
- Communicate daily with personnel from partner shelters and animal welfare organizations; obtaining records, coordinating schedules, etc.
- Responsible for the transport of animals to and from our partners by following our transport best practices and driving company vehicles.
- Conduct preliminary behavior and medical evaluations of canines and felines being considered for HSC’s adoption program.
- Ability to read and interpret medical, intake and behavior documentation.
- Prepare transport vehicle and kennels for incoming animals, including but not limited to: cleaning kennels, kennel set-up, making kennel cards and loading transport carriers.
- Monitor Adoption Return requests and communicate efficiently with returning parties.
- Field owner surrender submission forms and determine which animals are suitable for an assessment for HSC’s adoption program.
What We Are Looking For
- Required: Minimum one year of previous animal handling experience including holding for medical care.
- Required: Minimum one year of experience in a customer facing role.
- Required: Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable mode of transportation and good driving record.
- Preferred: Minimum of one year of animal sheltering experience.
- Preferred: Professional or educational experience in animal learning theory, animal behavior, and positive based force-free animal handling.
- Preferred: Professional or educational experience with basic veterinary procedures such as vaccinations, medication delivery, disease recognition and veterinary restraint strategies preferred.
- Must be comfortable with work that is physically intensive and partially outdoors, regardless of weather.
- Must be comfortable interacting with and handling dogs and cats.
- Must be reliable with minimal unscheduled absences. Must be willing and able to report to work to ensure operation of essential functions unless otherwise approved by a supervisor.

In 2022, HSC moved into our brand-new Animal Resource Center, and we are thrilled to have a brand-new state-of-the-art facility which allows us to be able to offer more comprehensive services to our community. Our Shelter Operations team was able to find homes for 3,671 pets last year and strive to live in a world where there are no more homeless and unwanted animals. The Humane Society of Charlotte is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit and relies only on the generous support of animal lovers, grants, bequests, and fees for service. We proudly maintain a Live Release Rate of 98% for the animals in our care. This success is achievable through our collaboration with national, state, and local animal groups.
