Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a community of high-performing public schools that utilizes a comprehensive approach to prepare students from preschool through high school for success in college and in life. Founded in 2000, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy students represent the neighborhood of MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles, a community that is one of the most under-resourced and densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Currently, CNCA has six campuses that serve approximately 3,500 students from TK through 12th grade.

The Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Director of Student Experience, the School Counselor Residency Coordinator will play a vital role in supporting the success of residents and the School Counselor Residency Consortium. The SCRC will provide coaching support to individual residents, own recruitment and selection to attract high-quality resident and mentor candidates, and provide essential administrative support to ensure the program's success. The SCRC is a Camino Nuevo Charter Academy employee and supports all partners within the School Counselor Residency Consortium.

About School Counselor Residency

CNCA School Counselor Residency is led by Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, in partnership with Loyola Marymount University. Camino Nuevo High School #2, an LEA located in Los Angeles County, is pleased to submit this application for a School Counselor Residency Capacity Grant on behalf of the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy consortium of 2 LEAs. Our capacity-building project will create a new pipeline to the school counselor field. United by our common mission and vision of a world where all students are supported with the guidance, tools, and knowledge they need to thrive, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy and Loyola Marymount University will partner to build a pipeline of counselor development in Los Angeles.

Essential Functions

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude the duties from the position if the work is similar, related, or logical to the role.

As the lead member of the planning team, a primary responsibility is to oversee the day-to-day operational aspects of the residency program design, focusing on adapting the curriculum, fieldwork requirements, as well as identifying, enhancing, and creating professional development.

  • This role will help oversee the overall direction of modifications to ensure they align with LMU's academic standards, CTC standards, and CNCA’s specific needs. This may include convening working groups when needed to include other LMU faculty with expertise relevant to the counseling program’s curriculum, as well as other CNCA school personnel whose roles include coordination of CNCA intern program partnerships and district professional development.
  • The coordinator will also review the current coursework offered by LMU’s PPS school counseling program and make modifications to ensure that it addresses the unique challenges and needs within CNCA.
  • Participate in specific training provided by CNCA and LMU, and other educational partners to meet CTC’s supervisory requirements, ensuring alignment with the Commission's standards.
  • Ongoing consultation and group supervision sessions will be developed to provide mentors with ongoing support throughout the residency program.
  • The Coordinator will also work to identify additional funding sources for the residency program.

School Counselor Residency Program Development

  • Participate in the creation, development, and maintenance of the CNCA School Counseling Program.
  • Provide the initial mentor training from LMU, under the direction of the Director of Student Experience and LEA partners.
  • Provide coaching and support for the counseling skills of our highly talented mentor team.
  • Support skill development with an emphasis on college & career success approach, restorative practices,
  • and culturally relevant pedagogy.
  • Engage in mentor training activities and coach and supervise the resident.
  • Assure that residents have opportunities to work with students with a mentor school counselor for at least 50% of each week across a full school year.
  • Ensure that residents are a consistent presence at their assigned school and are available to work directly with students and families throughout the year as well as support designing a cohort model within the School Counselor Residency Program.
  • Meet regularly with the residency group to gain exposure to new practices, grow their professional network, and build a support system of like-minded peers.
  • Meet with Mentors consistently to develop their leadership (ie. how to observe, coach, and provide feedback to their Residents), share best practices, provide feedback on coaching, and to collaborate around problems of practice.
  • Celebrate progress, develop knowledge and competencies on network-specific initiatives and priorities such as Trauma Informed Practices and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (& Anti-Racist Education).

Resident Learning and Development, which includes the following:

  • Overall management, support, and oversight of the School Counseling Residency project
  • Provide one-to-one meetings and support when needed for mentors and residents.
  • Track and maintain accurate records for current and future residents, mentors, and partners
  • Ensure compliance with all administrative procedures and regulations, always maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Process invoices; ensure documentation and monitoring in adherence to grant reporting requirements.
  • Conduct initial transcript reviews of Residency and Mentor applicants, liaise, and communicate with LMU, Candidates, and CNCA’s Human Assets Team.
  • Other duties as assigned
