Academic Tutor (SB WRAP)

SUMMARY:

The Academic Tutor will play a key role in supporting the educational needs of children in the San Bernardino Wraparound program. The position requires a passionate and empathetic individual with a strong educational background, patience, and the ability to work collaboratively with mental health professionals to create a supportive learning environment.


 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The San Bernardino Wrap program is a community-based, family-centered, needs-driven program designed to maintain children with emotional disturbances in the community at the lowest level of care possible. The goal of the program is to reduce the risk of out-of-home placement and recidivism by brining individuals, agencies and the community together as the decision-making team with the central focus being to meet the needs of the child and family. Services assist in supporting the mental health needs of children and their families, allowing safe and appropriate care, and promoting coordination and collaboration in care planning efforts with the Children and Family Team (CFT) and other child-serving agencies. 


GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree 
  2. Experience with providing education services and support to children
  3. Relevant experience working with youth in a mental health/social service setting and/or 2 years experience working with youth.


Licensure, Registration, Certification

  1. Valid CA driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
  2. Completion of CPR/First Aid/ProACT certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment.


JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring sessions to children with mental health challenges, tailoring instruction to meet individual learning needs.
  • Assist children in completing homework assignments and understanding class materials. Offer guidance and support in areas where additional help is needed.
  • Work collaboratively with mental health professionals to integrate academic support with mental health interventions. Communicate regularly to ensure a holistic approach to each child's development.
  • Track and document the academic progress of each child. Provide regular updates to parents, caregivers, and mental health professionals.
  • Be aware of potential academic challenges arising from mental health crises and provide appropriate support and accommodations.
  • Develop and curate educational resources that align with the unique needs of children facing mental health challenges.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Experience in tutoring or teaching, particularly with children facing mental health challenges.
  • Understanding of mental health issues affecting children and ability to respond with empathy.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Patience and adaptability in working with diverse learning needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
