Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Memorial Care, Long Beach Medical Center. The employee shall support Long Beach Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement and patient safety activities.


Under the direction of the Director of Social Work Services, the Manager of Social Work Services provides overall management of the department. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling care coordination activities. The Manager is responsible for providing oversight and broad direction of social work services to meet the psychosocial, emotional, financial, and spiritual needs of patients and their families, to assist them in adjusting to problems related to acute or chronic illnesses and/or disability, and to facilitate comprehensive dispositional planning in conjunction with other health care professionals and community agencies. The Manager of Social Work Services works closely with the medical staff and LBMC leadership to identify patient care needs and assist in removal of barriers for a safe and timely discharge. The Manager is responsible for ensuring delivery of quality patient care in compliance with all regulations, adherence to hospital policies and procedures, and overseeing customer service, patient satisfaction and staff performance and competence.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job


  • Hires, develops, and maintains performance and competence of clinical personnel.

  • Provides quality services through effective management, planning and education.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and procedures for the assigned department.

  • Collaborates with the Director to manage the operational and capital budget for the unit to meet financial goals.

  • Ensures cost-effective daily operations and allocation of resources.

  • Maintains effective staffing plans, achieves staff productivity goals.

  • Achieves employee engagement goals

  • Monitors the appropriate unit metrics to assure high levels of patient satisfaction and regulatory requirements are being met.

  • Supports the strategic plan and the goals and direction of the performance improvement plan.

  • Works closely with nursing and medical staff leadership to ensure effective and efficient operations of the unit.

  • Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive patient care issues and customer inquiries and/or complaints.

  • Implements best practices in accordance with the hospital policies.

  • Participates in department specific performance improvement project.

  • Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Qualifications


Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • 2 – 4 years health care experience preferred


  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skillKnowledge of psychosocial theories, information and referrals, effective use of community resources, and ability to provide direction and case consultation required

  • Demonstrates ability to incorporate the various functional and developmental ages into assessment and care of patients

  • Computer / Information system experience


  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory requirements for areas of responsibility (e.g. Joint Commission, CDPH, Conditions of Participation, CCS Standards)

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • MSW graduate from accredited school required

  • California LCSW required

  • Certification in related field preferred
