College Counselor (Part Time)
Location: Pleasanton, CA (In-Person)

Summit Tutoring Center is a trusted academic tutoring, test prep, and college counseling institution with over 15 years of experience supporting students and families in the Tri-Valley and surrounding communities. We specialize in SAT/ACT preparation, tutoring, preparation/ preview courses, and guiding middle and high school students through every stage of the college admissions process—academically, strategically, and personally.

We are seeking a passionate, experienced, and student-centered College Counselor to join our growing team.

Position Overview:

College Counselor will work with students in grades 6–12 to develop long-term strategies for high school success and college admissions readiness. This includes GPA management, internship placement, community service, starting non-profit projects, SAT/ACT preparation, summer planning, study skills, competitions, course selection, and more.

The ideal candidate has direct experience with the Common Application, UC Application, CSU Application, and college/summer program admission essays.

Responsibilities:

  • Help students with academic course planning in high school
  • Improve time management, organization, and study skills
  • Guide students and parents through course selection, testing, extracurriculars, leadership, internships, and community service
  • Advise students on researching schools and finalizing college lists
  • Support students through the full college admissions process (applications, essays, interviews, scholarships, etc.)
  • Manage and support the essay editing process for college and summer program applications
  • Manage a caseload of high school and middle school students
  • Maintain strong communication and relationships with families
  • Guide students through brainstorming, outlining, writing, and revising essays
  • Provide personalized feedback to help students express their authentic voice and goals
  • Teach students what admissions officers value and how to highlight strengths
  • Track student progress, meet deadlines, and ensure consistent communication
  • Build student confidence and clarity in self-presentation
  • Emailing college counseling meeting notes after each session
  • Provide guidance on standardized tests (SAT, ACT, PSAT, ISEE, SSAT, IB, AP)
  • Prepare students for college admission interviews
  • Understand admission deadlines (EA, ED I/II, REA, SCEA, Rolling, RD, Priority)
  • Support private/boarding school admissions processes in the local area, SF Bay Area, and nationally.
  • Be familiar with local public and private schools (Danville, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Dublin, Livermore)
  • Capable of working independently

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Undergraduate degree from a Top 30 U.S. college/university
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. undergraduate college admissions (Canada College or UK Admission processes is a plus)
  • Understanding of the role of standardized test scores in admissions
  • Passion for mentoring students and promoting their success
  • Enthusiastic, student-centered, positive attitude
  • Independent learner who thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Open to feedback, responsible, and accountable
  • Highly organized and efficient; able to multitask
  • Collaborative team player
  • Experience in college admissions, essay coaching, or student advising
  • Strong writing/editing skills and ability to help students find their voice
  • Ability to tailor feedback to each student’s goals and personality
  • Proactive and comfortable managing multiple students/timelines
  • Committed to ethical, student-focused guidance
  • Comfortable working with students, parents, and families
  • Willing to work part-time
  • Expected to work weekdays and occasionally Saturdays
  • Familiar with UC/CSU A-G Course Requirements
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting is essential.
  • Strong public speaking skills with the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated ability in mentoring, interviewing, and individual/group counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of education administration processes and academic advising principles.
  • Excellent analytical skills for assessing student needs and program effectiveness.
  • Willingness to learn and work hard.

What You Should Know:

  • Expected to work up to 5 days per week
  • Hours of operation:

– Weekdays: 1 PM – 9 PM
– Saturdays: 9 AM – 5 PM
