Description:

Keene Family YMCA is seeking part-time Lifeguards to work in their busy Aquatics Center. As a member of the Aquatics team, Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants in our Aquatics Center. Additionally, Lifeguards maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and in surrounding areas to create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.


Current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certifications, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are required. If you do not have the required certifications, you could be eligible to receive your certifications free of charge with one year of service at the Keene Family YMCA.

Essential Functions of the Lifeguard 

 

  1. Builds personal and meaningful relationships with YMCA members, participants, volunteers, and guests while exemplifying the Y’s commitment to the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect & responsibility.
  2. Responds to all member and community inquiries in a timely manner.
  3. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area by continuously scanning the pool area from side to side, regularly walking around the pool area to check blind spots, steam room, and sauna.
  4. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six model” (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Care, Report). Completes related reports as required.
  5. Maintains effective, positive, culturally aware relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  6. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. 
  7. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  8. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  9. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  10. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and for the duration of the shift.
  11. Lifeguards may be required to open or close the aquatics center.
  12. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.


Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Ability to perform duties with professionalism, enthusiasm, kindness, empathy, care, honesty, and respect.
  2. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. 
  3. Minimum age of 18.
  4. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  5. Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  6. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA/ARC standards.

PREFERED LEVEL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
  2. 5+ years of Lifeguarding.
