Summary:

The Substance Abuse Counselor position has primary responsibility counseling drug and alcohol abuse clients, aids with their personal adjustment and coordinates necessary resources and referrals. Persons in this position report to the Program Manager for the program to which the position is assigned. This position may be under filled at a Counselor I or Counselor II, with the latter possessing more relevant experience, as determined by IBHS. The position and may be a full time or part time position, depending on the needs of the program.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Typical responsibilities and duties of the Substance Abuse Counselor position include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Manage a case load of clients voluntarily and involuntarily engaged in individual counseling sessions and group counseling sessions
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions and group counseling sessions of individuals voluntarily and involuntarily participating in such sessions.
  • Assist with the development of counseling programs designed to aid the rehabilitation and social adjustment of clients.
  • Determine the need for and facilitate client referral to other programs and/or services
  • Assist licensed staff in developing and implementing programs to help in the rehabilitation of clients.
  • Assist clients in developing the appropriate plans for treatment.
  • Perform intake duties, including assessing the appropriate fee based on the financial resources of each client.
  • Review their files and the files of fellow counselors for the quality of documentation
  • Arrange for medical and laboratory services, vocational counseling, legal and other needed services.
  • Assist with providing crisis intervention and prevention services.
  • Maintain social data records to meet casework and accountability requirements.
  • Assist with the preparation of administrative reports concerning caseload, program statistics and related items.
  • Attend training sessions, staff development and other in-service training as directed by management.
  • Create timely and accurate documentation of client progress pursuant to program guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One-year experience in counseling/advising a chemical dependent population. Required to have BLS/CPR certification. Requirement to be registered with a State Board (CCAPP, CADTP, CAADE, BBS, BOP). Free of any non-medical drug usage for a minimum of 3 years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The essential function of the position is the management of the stresses, including those of the client, those of the employee personally, and those present in the work and home environment, related to achieving a mandated and/or personally desired change in behavior by a chemically dependent individual. It is an essential function of the position that the counselor be able to manage the stresses related to the processing of the clients as a case load towards the end of maintaining the required productivity. It is an essential function of the position that the counselors manage his or her response to the appearance, beliefs and behaviors of the client that they find personally repugnant. Conversely, it is an essential function that the counselor control inappropriate behaviors arising from any sympathy a client may induce. It is and essential function that the counselor manages any stresses arising from the need to resist the allure of a chemical dependent lifestyle. It is an essential function of the position that the counselor be self-aware of undesirable conditions in their personal or professional life arising from the stresses of the position and to take appropriate remedial action. It is an essential function of the position that the counselor be self-aware of undesirable conditions in their personal or professional life that adversely impact their ability to act as a counselor and to take appropriate remedial action.

Universal Requirements:

Pre-employment requirements include I-9, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, drug screening and completion of employee health screening.
