Description
Malvern Treatment Centers is currently seeking a full time Counselor to work at our Malvern Treatment Center facility in Philadelphia. The location of our Malvern Treatment Centers - Philadelphia recently relocated to a brand new, beautiful building at 3905 W. Ford Road - Philadelphia, PA 19131.
The mission of the Counselor is to counsel patients regarding all aspects of their addiction. He or she must be an active member of the treatment team in the formulation of assessments, treatment plans, diagnostic summaries, progress notes, and continuing care planning. The Counselor will provide supportive individual counseling, conduct group therapy, and review clients at case conferences with other team members. He or she must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills to provide these services to clients with chemical dependencies.
The ideal candidate has a Master's degree or higher from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing, or other related field that includes a practicum in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting. Other acceptable degrees and experience would be a Bachelor's degree in a related field with one year of clinical experience (minimum of 1820 hours) in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting, or an Associate's degree in a related field with two years of clinical experience (minimum of 1820 hours) in a health or human services agency. If a candidate's experience did not take place in a drug and alcohol setting, his or her written training plan must specifically address a plan to achieve counseling competency in chemical dependency issues. He or she must have full certification in this state as an Addictions Counselor and must be licensed in this state if a Registered Nurse (RN). In addition, he or she must be skilled in using Microsoft Office and must be able to function calmly in a crisis situation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Administers assessments, establishes and revises individualized treatment goals, and participates in the formulation of diagnostic summaries
  • Documents patient progress in a manner that facilitates Utilization Review (UR) and corresponds to goals and objectives in treatment plan
  • Provides pertinent information at case conferences and expresses disagreement when necessary
  • Completes case conference documentation in a timely manner
  • Addresses problematic behaviors in patients
  • Conducts group therapy according to stage of group development
  • Gets involved in projects that improve delivery of treatment and participates in ongoing educational and training process
  • Keeps referral sources updated as to patient progress
  • Maintains family contacts in a timely manner
  • Maintains communication with patient's families and facilitates participation in treatment
  • Keeps personal issues separate from therapeutic process and relationships
  • Delivers lectures and workshops in an appropriate manner
  • Interacts with co-workers in a helpful manner that contributes to high morale
  • Assumes responsibilities for case management, lectures, and group therapy as required and asked
  • Maintains and sets up aftercare for all patients in a timely manner in case of AMA
  • Arrives at scheduled activities on time
  • Completes paperwork and documentation on time and in a comprehensive manner
  • Completes discharge summaries in a timely manner
  • Performs evaluations for potential admissions and refers patients to appropriate level of care based on ASAM criteria
  • Involves patients in the treatment planning process
  • Completes treatment plans in a timely manner and ensures they are comprehensive in nature
  • Determines appropriate length of stay for patients based on ASAM criteria
  • Facilitates discharge process in an appropriate manner
  • May give direction and provide feedback on the performance of students
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field preferred; will accept Bachelor's or Associate's degree with corresponding experience
  • One to two years of clinical experience in a health or human service agency, preferably in a drug and alcohol setting
  • Knowledge of 12-step recovery and an understanding of chemical dependency
  • Able to provide individual counseling as well as group therapy
  • Able to work in a supportive, caring, and non-judgmental manner with staff and patients in order to gain confidence and cooperation
  • Able to operate as a role model in speech and behaviors consistent with recovery principles
  • Confident, articulate, and able to speak effectively in front of groups and individuals to provide education/training
  • Demonstrated proficiency at educating, communicating, and empathizing with patients, answering questions and concerns in a manner that is respectful

Emergency Classification: Non-Essential Personnel
Technical/Computer Skills: Microsoft Office Proficient.
Work Environment and Hazards: No hazardous conditions. Protected from weather conditions.
Physical Requirements: Sedentary work - lifting 10lbs maximum
