The North Range Behavioral Health Peer Counseling program works with seniors 60 or older who face challenges that put them at risk for anxiety or depression. This program employs and trains older, semi-retired, compassionate individuals to provide confidential support, encouragement, and coping tools for seniors and their families. Our Peer Counselors visit clients in their homes, residential facilities, or the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Peer Counselors provide supportive counseling services to clients in the privacy of their homes, apartments, assisted living facilities, nursing home facilities, or other community locations.
- Encourage, support, and help older adults learn how to cope with emotional stressors and l; life difficulties.
- Relate to the emotional stresses of the aging process by offering clients hope regarding resiliency, through appropriate self-disclosure, role modeling, and coaching.
- Assist clients in improving their well-being and quality of life by coaching them in behavioral skills; educate clients to make informed choices; help the client problem solve and negotiate tasks/activities of daily living. May provide a listening ear to clients when needed.
- Advocate for the client in different forums, including but not limited to nursing homes and with their families.
- A High School Diploma and/or ability to successfully demonstrate reading, writing, and speaking skills, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are highly desired.
- Must have personal experience and coping skills that enable understanding of the concerns, problems, and feelings of older adults.
- Must have sensitivity to individual needs and show respect for a person's independence and ability.
- The ability to share skills and use life events and experiences in a self-help approach to assist seniors in reaching maximum growth and fulfillment. Possess an interest in committing to the Peer Counseling program and philosophy.
