Role Summary:

College Bound Advising, a full-service College Admissions Advising Organization, is seeking a part-time Associate Director of College Counseling to join our growing team. The ideal candidate is friendly, enthusiastic, and flexible, with excellent communication skills. You will be focused on guiding students (and their parents by extension) as they plan for and apply to college. You will also be a strategic partner in leading our Counseling department. This role will be multifaceted, allowing you not only to guide our students and their families but also to serve as a mentor and advise other college counselors on the team. You will have the opportunity to present at client events and develop innovative programming that responds to evolving university admissions policies and procedures. This position offers the unique opportunity to shape the future of college counseling while making a meaningful impact on students' educational journeys. This is a part-time, year-round, and hybrid position.

What will you be engaged in day-to-day?

Counseling:

  • Meeting with students and parents to guide them through all steps of the college planning and application process, communicating with them regularly, and answering their questions.
  • Partnering in the leadership of the other departments, developing our mission and vision collaboratively to align with the overall company goals.
  • Organizing and implementing present evening and daytime events.
  • Counseling one cohort of students in both academic and college matters, including:
  • Collaborating with students on creating a list of appropriate colleges to research, visit, and apply to, and directing them to resources to learn about those colleges.
  • Supporting all efforts with college applications, including the development of successful application plans.
  • Working closely with each student to brainstorm application essay ideas, and then reviewing/critiquing each essay draft.
  • Preparing students for effective college visits and both on-campus and alumni interviews.
  • Developing an application timeline, in concert with students and parents, complete with a thoughtful determination about early decision opportunities, if applicable.
  • Strategically discussing standardized testing (ACT/SAT test-prep planning and monitoring progress), scholarships, and financial aid.
  • Offering insights to students related to extracurricular activities and summer program opportunities that enrich their interests and strengthen their college applications.
  • Teaching students how to best market themselves by collaborating on and helping them develop and maintain their activity résumé.
  • Proactively tracking students’ progress, notifying them and/or parents when deadlines are approaching and/or missed.
  • Providing positive encouragement to keep students engaged and reduce their stress.
  • Travelling, occasionally, to colleges and conferences to keep abreast of college admissions processes/changes.

Leadership:

  • Serving as grade coordinator for one or more graduating classes.
  • Participating in internal leadership meetings to help grow our client base.
  • Organizing and leading grade-wide events.
  • Partnering with other counselors to update the curriculum and create new activities/worksheets for students.
  • Supervising counseling staff, offering mentorship, supervision, and guidance.
  • Overseeing the department budget.
  • Mentoring and leading seasonal interns.

Growth:

  • Coordinating with the team to create and launch new services.
  • Leading the team to develop and implement the Admissions Academy group counseling curriculum.
  • Recruiting families for 1:1 counseling, workshops, and the Admissions Academy.
  • Participating in conferences and professional development opportunities, including visiting college campuses as requested.

Administrative:

  • Leading and/or supporting our college-planning workshops and webinars for students and parents
  • Assisting in college-admission research projects.
  • Drafting college-admission-related blogs for our website.
  • Participating in local college fairs, meeting with families to explain and promote our college-counseling and test-prep services.

What qualifications will help you be successful in this role?

  • At least five years’ experience working as an admission officer at a university and/or as a college counselor (high-school-based or independent).
  • A college counseling certificate is highly preferred, or the willingness to pursue one within the first six months of employment.
  • Genuinely enjoying working with adolescents and being adept at developing good rapport.
  • Outstanding communication skills demonstrating you are: articulate, patient, clear, willing to explain details multiple times, and able to ensure student follow-through.
  • Some managerial experience, where you have both had supervisory experience and managed budget forecasts.
  • A malleable personal schedule to meet with students in the late afternoons, evenings, and on weekends when students are not at school.
  • Formidable computer skills, especially with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets), that will allow, among other things, for keeping student and college files organized and providing quick responses to emails the same day they are received.
  • Superb organizational, record-keeping, and time management skills.
  • Exceptional creative writing and editing skills within what is often a time-constrained schedule.
  • Serving as a collaborative problem-solver and creative thinker with a solid work ethic.
  • BA/BS required; graduate degree in an associated field is strongly preferred.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a self-starter with the willingness and desire to “roll up your sleeves” and get the job done.
  • Have a balance of being both a visionary and a hard-working finisher.
  • Envision new initiatives for our students and their families - serving as an “ideas contributor” and team player.
  • Have a “growth mindset”, love to learn, and will actively step up to find new opportunities/programs and information for our students.
  • Embrace collaboration with colleagues.
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
