Position Summary:
Adams State University Admissions department is seeking an Admissions Counselor responsible for outreach, recruitment, and counseling of prospective students in the San Luis Valley and South-Central Colorado regions. Key duties include representing Adams State University at college fairs, high school visits, and other outreach activities. This role will work closely with the 14 high schools in the San Luis Valley, as well as other schools in the broader region. The Admissions Counselor will maintain communication with prospective students and their families, review admissions applications, coordinate recruitment events, build relationships with high school counselors, and provide general advising on admissions, financial aid, and academics. Some travel (in-state and out-of-state), along with evening and weekend work, is required. Key Responsibilities:
- Counsel prospective students throughout the admissions process.
- Represent Adams State University at college fairs, day/night programs, student conferences, and other outreach events.
- Organize and conduct visits, classroom presentations, and recruitment activities at high schools in the San Luis Valley and South-Central Colorado.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders at high schools, including counselors, to assist students with the admissions, financial aid, and housing processes.
- Communicate with prospective students and families via phone, email, digital platforms, and written communication, employing innovative methods to connect and engage students.
- Advise students on degree programs, course selection, placement test interpretation, and other academic matters.
- Collaborate with campus departments (e.g., financial aid, academic areas, housing, and athletics) to support students throughout the admissions process.
- Provide financial aid counseling related to federal, state, and institutional aid, as well as private scholarships and student financial services.
- Coordinate and promote special events, such as counselor breakfasts/luncheons, application days, financial aid nights, student receptions, and campus visits.
- Assist with the planning and execution of on- and off-campus recruitment activities, including Discover Day, Grizz Bizz, group visits, New Student Orientation, and other programs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment activities and report outcomes to the Assistant Director of Admissions Recruitment.
- Participate in campus training sessions, team meetings, and professional organizations.
- Help develop social media content and marketing materials for the Admissions department.
- Ensure compliance with NCAA rules and regulations in recruitment practices.
- Use Workday to track admissions application statuses and schedule appointments with Academic Advisors.
- Meet with prospective students prior to campus tours to answer questions and present information about the university.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor to ensure the success of the department
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area (i.e., business, marketing, etc.)
- 1-3 years previous work experience
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (please attach a copy)
- Experience in setting and achieving goals.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with - software applications and technology such as Workday, MS Office Suites, Google Suites?
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
- Experience working with diverse, non-traditional, and underserved student populations in a supportive manner.
- Ability to treat others with respect, civility, and courtesy and to work honestly, effectively, and collegially with employees, students, and the community. This includes the ability to use appropriate conflict management skills to effectively manage any disagreement that might arise or to bring the disagreement to management for assistance in productive resolution when the situation requires.
- Ability to interact respectfully and professionally with students, staff, and the community.
- Experience managing professional social media accounts.
- Ability to travel in and around the San Luis Valley and other territories, including occasional overnight stays.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Initiative in developing new recruitment partnerships and opportunities.
- Experience working effectively both as a team member and independently.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with diplomacy and professionalism.
- Previous experience in higher education, particularly in an admissions or academic advising role.
- Experience in student advising.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish.
Work Environment:
- This position is based on the Adams State University campus in Alamosa, Colorado, and requires travel to the San Luis Valley and other recruitment areas. Some travel may involve overnight stays.
- Flexibility in work hours is required, with the possibility of early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $38,412-$43,692.
