POSITION PURPOSE:

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is responsible for building a recovery community within the recovery residence/sober living environment, acting as a recovery mentor for all residents. The PSS is responsible for being a familiar first resource for resident’s questions and enforcing the recovery residence/sober living environment guidelines and rules.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

1. EDUCATION:

Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

2. EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 1 year sustained sobriety and experience working in a sober living environment and/or behavioral health treatment facility preferred.

A minimum of 3 years clean driving record.

Must be able to pass a drug toxicology test.

3. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Certified Recovery Specialist Certification/Peer Support Specialist preferred.

4. KEY COMPETENCIES REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE:

  • For those individuals in recovery, ability to appropriately self-disclose their recovery story
  • Demonstrate and understanding of ethical guidelines, including maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality, respect and empathy
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm about providing support and recovery guidance to residents in all stages of recovery
  • Demonstrate history of reliability, dependability, punctuality and organized
  • Demonstrate of being an excellent listener with a solid understanding of what it takes to treat or manage residents with substance use or co-occurring disorders

1. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Position is required to work in a temperature-controlled environment; 80% - 90% of the time spent indoors.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY TO POSITION

  • * Responsible for transporting residents, in a safe manner, to and from the treatment provider, 12-step fellowship meetings/events, appointments, food shopping and activities as necessary and appropriate.
  • Responsible for monitoring residents, maintaining the sober living environments daily schedule, enforcing the rules and expectations.
  • Responsible for prompting residents participation with their activities of daily living: wake-up, chores, meal preparation and participation, laundry, care of personal space, care of personal hygiene, time management, use of down-time, bed-time, and other activities involving living skills.
  • Responsible for providing coaching, recovery and emotional support, problem solving and crisis management to the residents.
  • Responsible for monitoring, observing, intervening upon, and documenting all residents behaviors and interaction in the shift report at the end of shift.
  • Responsible for interacting with residents in an approachable, empathetic, supportive, respectful manner at all times. This includes when intervening on resident behavior or when a resident is disrespectful in return.
  • Responsible for alerting management immediately to intervene in emergencies, safety/risk issues to ensure a safe and supportive recovery environment for the resident and staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining strict resident confidentiality.
  • Responsible for completion of move in and move out paperwork from the sober living environment, including resident orientation to the residence guidelines. This includes during the move out, ensuring all personal items have been gathered by the resident, removing all bedding, linens and other items to prepare the living space for new residents.
  • Responsible for notifying emergency contact, when applicable and necessary.
  • Responsible for observing medication self-administration, medication tracking and verification count, as required, and documenting in residents EMR.
  • Responsible to conduct waived testing according to Drug Testing policy and procedures.
  • Responsible for the completion of incident reports, as necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining active awareness of resident’s locations and what activities in which theory engaged at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
