Overview:
Support special education students in general and special education classrooms by providing behavioral interventions, academic assistance, and social-emotional/mental health support. Assist teachers with classroom management and maintain a safe, engaging learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Behavioral Support:
- Deescalate challenging behaviors and provide crisis intervention using approved strategies.
- Supervise students to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.
- Document and report behavioral incidents.
Academic Support:
- Tutor individuals/small groups to reinforce learning objectives.
- Assist teachers with instructional materials, classroom setup, and test administration.
Life Skills & Emotional Support:
- Help students with life skills like hygiene, motor skills, and emotional regulation.
- Monitor students’ emotional and physical needs, reporting concerns promptly.
Administrative Support:
- Maintain and update student records, behavior data, and reports.
- Operate educational tools, assistive technology, and office equipment.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with teachers, therapists, and staff to implement behavior plans and instructional strategies.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to student progress discussions.
Health & Safety:
- Administer first aid and support health-related needs.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols.
Qualifications: (AA degree or unit equivalent or pass an employer offered paraprofessional exam)
Knowledge of:
- Child development, behavior management, and intervention techniques.
- Classroom procedures, instructional support strategies, and IEP accommodations.
- Basic academic subjects (math, science, ELA, social studies).
Skills/Abilities:
- Calmly de-escalate students and manage challenging behaviors.
- Provide academic and emotional support to individuals/small groups.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and families.
- Maintain accurate records and perform clerical tasks.
- Work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
Requirements:
- Ability to lift, monitor, and physically support students as needed.
- Onsite attendance required.
