POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES:


The After School Counselor is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment where children feel supported and engaged.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet the individual needs of children by engaging with them through play, exploration, and learning opportunities
  • Communicate effectively, respectfully, and professionally with parents, guardians, and fellow staff members
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and welcoming environment where children feel valued and supported
  • Assist in designing and maintaining an After School space that supports active supervision and meets the developmental needs of children
  • Support children in completing their schoolwork, and offering guidance and encouragement as needed
  • Communicate frequently with Site Director and Assistant Directors
  • Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of all children at all times, following all JCC and OCFS safety guidelines
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to team planning and reflection
  • Complete the required number of annual training hours in accordance with New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) regulations
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Site Director or program leadership


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-2 years’ experience working with children ages 5-12
  • High School Degree
  • Willing to submit to all background checks required by NYS
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Strong team-building skills
  • Detail oriented and able to multi-task

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the workday, depending on the activities and supervision needs.
  • Frequent movement between different areas (e.g., classrooms, playgrounds, activity rooms) to ensure all students are supervised and engaged.
  • Must be able to kneel, bend, squat, or crouch to interact with children at their level during activities or games.
  • Ability to lift children or assist with physically demanding tasks up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to lift and carry items such as bags, supplies, or event materials (up to 20-30 lbs), especially during activity setups or cleanups.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Both indoor and outdoor environments, depending on weather and program activities.
  • Work closely with other staff members, including lead educators, fellow assistants, and possibly volunteers.

Direct interaction with children, creating a positive, supportive, and nurturing atmosphere


Compensation details:
19-23 Hourly Wage
