Saint Leo the Great School is seeking a certified School Counselor for a full-time position for the 2025-2026 school year. This position is to deliver counseling programs and services that promote the social and emotional well-being of students according to their developmental needs from Early Childhood through 8th Grade.
Qualifications:
- New Jersey School Counselor Certificate
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university
- Previous experience in school setting and in Teaching and/or Clinical experience
- Experience working with a variety of age groups from early childhood through middle school
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Essential Functions:
1. To confer with parents regarding problems affecting student behavior, progress and development.
2. To provide individual counseling to students experiencing academic, emotional or behavioral challenges.
3. Provide educational and preventive curriculum and/or lessons in the areas of social and emotional competency and learning via classroom lessons for grades K-8.
4. To provide group support when necessary based on needs of the student population and faculty/staff recommendations.
5. To provide support to parents related to character development, student success, and overall mental wellness.
6. Assist in delivery of the school’s character development program.
7. To collaborate and work with the Pupil Personnel Services Child Study Team, principals, guidance personnel, attendance officer, teachers, and other professional staff members regarding pupils with school-related challenges.
8. To utilize working knowledge of and liaise with other social agencies and community resources for any student experiencing school and/or emotional challenges.
9. To assess at-risk youth and make appropriate referrals to higher levels of care, when necessary.
10. To maintain documentation and records as necessary.
11. Assist in the administration of standardized testing program.
12. To maintain an ongoing and up-to-date awareness of recent trends in education and innovative methods of proven merit that may be incorporated into the program.
13. To analyze the effectiveness of school programming and support student curriculum trends.
14. To support faculty and staff with professional development as it relates to trauma-informed schools and best practices for working with youth.
15. To maintain continual communication with the Principal and Vice Principals.
16. Assist graduating students with admissions, scholarship, and additional educational opportunities.
17. Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
18. Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings.
19. Serves as ready resource to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
20. Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs, including students with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with guidance services.
21. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
22. Model Christian behavior and demonstrate the morals and values contained in the Gospels.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of early childhood development.
- Knowledge of school counselor and/or school social work expectations.
- Knowledge of high school admissions processes, scholarship programs and other educational opportunities.
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate behavioral interventions, differentiated instruction modalities, and student learning styles.
- Working knowledge of the New Jersey Children’s System of Care and other community resources that can support student needs.
- Experience in making effective referrals for care and intervening with and assessing at-risk youth.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical Demands:
- Stand for most of the day.
- Agree to abide by any state or local health department guidelines.
- Sit with and lean over students, as well as bend, crouch, stoop, kneel and crawl to assist individuals as permitted by social distancing regulations.
- Balance and walk around the classrooms.
- Reach out and above with hands and arms, up to chalkboard, interactive white board and bulletin board height.
- Climb stairs and/or use an elevator.
- Push or pull carts with educational equipment.
- Climb or stand on a short ladder.
- Manipulate educational tools such as scissors, hole punchers, tactile materials when appropriate.
- Verbalize, listen, hear, and see including close vision.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35,000.00 - $42,000.00 per year
