High School Counselor


Position:
School Counselor
Reports to: Principal & Director of Guidance
Location: North Andover High School
Work Year: 184 days (per teacher contract)
Salary: In accordance with the North Andover Teachers Association CBA


OVERVIEW

The School Counselor at North Andover High School works collaboratively with students, families, staff, and community partners to promote academic success, college and career readiness, and personal and social development for all students. The counselor serves as an advocate, guide, and resource, ensuring that students are supported in making informed decisions about their education and future.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field (or degree in process)
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license as a School Counselor (Grades 9–12)
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and supporting a diverse student population
  • Experience in high school counseling
  • Familiarity with Naviance or similar college/career readiness platforms
  • Knowledge of current trends in college admissions and financial aid
  • Understanding of and experience with social emotional learning and SEL supports for students
  • Bilingual preferred but not required (Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Academic Support & Planning

  • Advise students on course selection, scheduling, and academic requirements for graduation
  • Monitor academic progress and support students in developing effective study skills and learning strategies
  • Collaborate with teachers to identify and address academic concerns
  • Maintain accurate academic records and prepare transcripts as needed


College & Career Readiness

  • Guide students through the college application process, including letters of recommendation, essays, and scholarship opportunities
  • Provide information about vocational, military, and other post-secondary options
  • Organize and participate in college fairs, career days, and informational workshops
  • Maintain resources on colleges, careers, and financial aid opportunities


Social-Emotional Support

  • Provide short-term counseling to address personal, social, or emotional concerns
  • Identify and refer students to appropriate outside resources or school-based support services
  • Foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students


Family & Community Engagement

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and concerns
  • Serve as a liaison between home, school, and outside agencies
  • Participate in IEP and 504 plan meetings as appropriate


Program & School Support

  • Participate in department, faculty, and professional development meetings
  • Support and participate in school-wide initiatives related to academic achievement, equity, and student wellness
  • Assist with scheduling, standardized testing coordination, and student orientation programs


EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Massachusetts Educator Evaluation Frameworks and North Andover Public Schools policies.
