About Job

The Social Worker will provide comprehensive social work services to students with moderate disabilities, including developmental delay, autism, and emotional impairment and their parents/guardians. The Social Worker will address barriers that may prevent a student from receiving the full benefit from their educational experience. This individual will respond to referrals from school administration, will collaborate with community partners and parents/guardians, and will assist families in accessing appropriate community resources.

Shore partners with City Connects (https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/schools/lynch-school/sites/city-connects.html), an evidence-based intervention that helps teachers and schools provide integrated supports to address the needs of students in schools serving under-resourced neighborhoods and families. Shore's Social Workers act as the City Connects Coordinators for a selection of programs.

This position follows the school calendar, and includes a five week summer program.

Location: Owen School - Chelsea, MA

DUTIES:

  • Establish and lead a Student Support team and process for the assigned programs that identifies and responds to the strengths and personal developmental needs of every child.
  • Connect students and families to a range of prevention, intervention, and other servies and programs that address the physical, emotional, cognitive and social development of each student.
  • Develop and enhance community partnerships with varied community agencies to meet the identified needs fo students, families and the school
  • Collaborate with school staff, including teachers, to implement the City Connects model.
  • Promote the City Connects model of student support to the school community, families and community agencies.
  • Engage families and caregivers in understanding and supproting the education of their children and the ways in which academic outcomes are enhanced by serving the social/emotion and personal development needs of the child.
  • Collect data on the implementation of the model and delivery of services.
  • Participate in other student-focused team meetings as needed.
  • Assist families with receiving wrap-around support from community agencies.
  • Participate and assist with the transition of students from grade to grade and school to adult life.
  • Participate in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices for the provision of comprehensive school social work services.
  • Act as liaison and promotes proactive, responsive, and clear communication with all stakeholders while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensed, or eligible for licensure as a Social Worker; Bilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply!
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults.
  • Commitment to remain current in field knowledge, evaluation, and counseling strategies.
  • Knowledge of community and state agencies and programs for children and families preferred.
  • Experience working in a school environment preferred.
  • Ability and commitment to work collaboratively with a diverse staff, a diverse sutdent body and families, as well as a team of professionals.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Executive Director may find appropriate and in conformity with state licensure requirements.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work involves student interaction, and is performed primarily in an office or classroom setting.

This position will be part of the Massachusetts State Retirement System.
