Role, Responsibilities, and Opportunities

Being a Special Education Paraprofessional is a rewarding vocation that calls for compassion, patience, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of students with Autism. This position offers the chance to work one-on-one in an engaging, motivating atmosphere, both inside the classroom and out in the community. Through individualized instruction and collaborative teamwork, paraprofessionals empower students to reach their educational goals and strengthen their functional life skills.

Role Overview

As a Special Education Paraprofessional, you become a vital member of an educational team devoted to fostering growth and independence in students with Autism. You work closely with the lead teacher, implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and supporting students’ progress academically, socially, and emotionally. The position emphasizes a year-round commitment with a 7.5-hour workday, along with 4-5 weeks off during the school year and Fridays off in the summer, striking a healthy balance between dedication and rest.

Key Responsibilities

· Individualized Instruction: Deliver tailored lessons and activities using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior (VB), adapting teaching methods to suit each student’s unique learning profile.

· Motivating Environment: Foster a positive, energetic, and encouraging atmosphere that inspires students to participate and thrive.

· Community Integration: Support students in community settings, helping them generalize skills beyond the classroom and promoting independence.

· Team-Based Collaboration: Work alongside teachers, therapists, and other professionals to ensure cohesive support and consistent application of best practices.

· Behavior Management: Use evidence-based strategies to address behaviors and help students develop self-regulation skills.

· IEP Implementation: Follow and contribute to individualized plans, track student progress, and communicate observations to the lead teacher and team.

· Transportation: Safely transport students in your own vehicle, ensuring their comfort and security during community-based activities.

Qualifications

· At least one year of experience working with individuals with Autism.

· Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, or a related field is preferred.

· Valid driver’s license and willingness to transport students as needed.

· Current CPR/first aid certification and all required clearances.

· Opportunities for BCBA, BCaBA, and/or RBT mentoring opportunities for professional growth.

Skills and Personal Attributes

· Communication: Ability to convey instructions clearly and support students' development of social and functional communication skills.

· Patience and Empathy: Understanding the unique challenges faced by students with Autism, responding with care and encouragement.

· Problem-Solving: Adaptable and resourceful in addressing unexpected situations and customizing approaches for individual needs.

· Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and specialists, contributing to a supportive learning community.

· Commitment to Inclusion: Dedication to helping students participate fully in school and community activities.

Professional Growth

Mentoring for BCBA, BCaBA, or RBT candidates is available, offering pathways for ongoing development in the field of special education and behavioral interventions. This guidance helps paraprofessionals refine their skills, deepen their understanding of Autism, and advance their careers within a supportive framework.
