Job Title: After School Counselor

Position Description: The After School Counselor position requires excellent program leadership, planning, and implementation skills, specifically targeting youth development. The ideal candidate is expected to proactively participate in the delivery of program services that meet the academic, social and emotional needs of Wesley Community Center youth members. Youth program areas include but are not limited to education, athletics, technology, visual and performing arts, and service learning.
Essential Functions:
- Plan, implement, and supervise out-of-school time enrichment activities that promote a safe and fun environment for Wesley Community Center youth program participants
- Model behavior with appropriate boundaries through serving as a mentor for youth
- Document all incidents that arise affecting the safety and well-being of youth participants
- Maintain appropriate documentation for data tracking, compliance, and reporting purposes
- Entering of data into database
- Communicate effectively with all Wesley employees and subcontractors regarding issues affecting youth program operations and facilities
- Engage parents regarding expectations and opportunities to support youth program participants
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in field trips and other off-site visits benefitting program participants
- Assist staff in the planning and/or execution of special events benefitting Wesley Community Center, including facilitating activities, participating in set-up and/or clean up, or customer service
- Complete any required or mandated trainings and/or professional development workshops
- Able to support through word and action the Wesley Community Center’s Mission statement and the mission’s core values of integrity, excellence and commitment through completion of other duties as needed and assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Effective communication skills both verbally and written, and must be able to work with diverse populations; Bilingual, Spanish-speaking preferred; Must have Valid Texas Driver’s License or State issued ID, and state required automobile liability insurance coverage.
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in social services or education related fields preferred, but not necessary. Experience: At least (3) years of experience working with adolescents and youth in a school or after school program setting. Knowledge of planning and implementing youth program is mandatory.
Work/Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to work constructively and cooperatively in a team environment. While in this position, the employee is expected to seek to understand, communicate appropriately and effectively, build a positive, professional rapport with all clients and staff. Employee(s) in this position will work primarily in an active youth setting where they will interact with children and youth to implement high energy program services requiring employee to have to regularly stand, walk, run, jump, bend, squat, lift, and carry to complete job duties. Must be able to lift at least 35 pounds unassisted; youth staff may be required to move equipment, and may also need to assist in physically assisting child(ren) in moving from one area to another. Must be available to work a flexible schedule, with primary hours of operation being 1:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. during the school year, and 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. during the summer; the employee may be required to work weekends in support of program services and special events.
