Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer and in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lower Bergen County, the Social Worker/ Intervention Specialist is accountable for working directly with students and their families. This person will work independently in developing systems, strategies, and documentation (forms) for club members. Additionally, the Social Worker/ Intervention Specialist will work closely in assisting in training front line staff in working with students in areas of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Trauma Informed Care. The Social Worker/ Intervention Specialist will develop themed monthly workshops for families in addressing areas of concern, or need, related to mental or physical health.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Must be able to work effectively, and efficiently. (this can include a remote work environment)
  • Must be able to pass a background check. Consisting of two NJDCF required checks and two organizational checks.
  • Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol test at the employers request and comply with a Drug Free policy.
  • Must be able to provide a valid (acceptable) identification for the completion of the employment eligibility verification information in accordance with the I-9.
  • Flexible and able to adapt to changes in the work environment.
  • An understanding of the Clubs mission and values.
  • Ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and exhibit excellent relationship building skills with all levels of employees, management, and students (families).
  • Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Participate in staff meetings, surveys, questionnaires as needed by the program or organization. Must clock in, or complete time sheet daily upon arrive and at the end of the work shift.
  • Acts as a role model by their actions in both their professional and private life.
  • Contributes to ensuring a healthy and safe environment for members.
  • Contributes to ensuring that facilities, equipment and supplies are maintained (as needed).
  • Reports any suspected abuse to the Program Director and Site Coordinator, to ensure that the proper steps in reporting and documentation are completed.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and conducts business using a customer centered approach.
  • Must be knowledgeable in utilizing Zoom, groupme, google classroom.
  • Must have a good understanding on how to use computer and web-based programs.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities)

The essential function or duties are provided for illustration only and may include other reasonable tasks as assigned for the good of the Club.

  • Provide psychotherapy services to members, focusing on their unique developmental and emotional needs.
  • Establish a therapeutic relationship with youth to build trust and encourage engagement in the therapeutic process.
  • Address a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, bullying, self-esteem, and behavioral challenges.
  • Must be able to evaluate when group, and/or family, counseling interventions are needed.
  • Delivers consultation counseling services to students and their families, as needed.
  • Offers client/student centered advocacy.
  • Provides referral and linkage to ancillary and/or specialized treatment services and interventions as needed.
  • To act as a liaison between the Program (Boys & Girls Clubs of Lower Bergen County), home, and community to provide guidance, prevention, assessment, and support services to enhance the academic, social, and emotional success of our clients/students.
  • Responsible for developing and revising counseling forms and practices that will be used with program participants.
  • Provides direct supervision over Social work interns.
  • Conducts training with staff (Youth Development Professions) related to areas of SEL and Trauma Informed Care.
  • Exhibited experience working with a diverse population with a particular focus on students K-12 grade.
  • Assist senior staff as necessary to ensure successful outcome of the Clubs operations and mission.

  • Maintain confidentiality of members, employees, and Club information.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of principles and practices of social work.

Education / Certifications

  • Education Requirement: Masters degree in Social Worker (MSW) from a fully accredited school (accreditation by the Council on Social work Education)
  • License Preferred: - Persons hired or reassigned to social worker position must be licensed (LSW or LCSW) in New Jersey to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.

Base hours

  • Months: 12 months- Full Time
  • Work schedule will consist of approximately 37.5 hours per week, from Monday through Friday.

Working conditions

  • These tasks are to be primarily performed at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lower Bergen County in Lodi and Hackensack. However, periodic travel to the other may be expected. Additionally, there may be a need to attend off-site meetings, trainings, and conferences.
